WWYD - switched at birth

edited January 2014 in January 2013 Moms
DH was listening to a podcast a couple nights ago that asked the question "what would you do if at 1 year old you found out your child had been switched at birth?"

The two options were "fight to get your biological child back" or "fight to keep the child you had been raising." I thought it was a really interesting question and the audience responses were pretty much split down the middle. So, what would you do?

    This! I cannot even imagine.

  • I don't even know how I could even begin the thought process required to make a decision like that. What a horrible thought.

  • That would be so hard to decide. You loved your baby for 40 weeks in utero and once you have raised a child for a year I can't imagine giving them back. I want to keep both babies. Scary thought and I'm glad DD never left my side in the hospital.

  • So scary, there is no doubt DS is ours, but IF this happened I have no idea what to do, so many things to think about. There was a tv movie about this on Lifetime several years ago. I would most certainly be suing the hospital!

  • I can't even vote! I'm very thankful not to be in that situation.

I would absolutely fight to keep DS. I would at the very least want some contact with the biological child if I can't have both. Hopefully the other family would be open to becoming one large, crazy, mixed up family.

  • I voted for keeping the baby I had. I cannot imagine someone coming and telling me that my daughter wasn't actually mine and having to give her up.  I can't even imagine how horrible that would be for her either.  The other family would just have to be cool with us moving next door to them and having a super weird blended family.

Thank goodness there was never any question. DD has DH's same weird toes.

  • This makes me want to cry. So glad either DH or I could see her the entire time we were in the hospital!!! Off to snuggle my daughter...

  • DD2 was taken off to the NICU within minutes of birth so I have had the irrational thought that perhaps she could have been switched...but I'm banking on the fact that they actually put those baby LoJacks on right away!  I agree with others that I would definitely want to keep the DD I've been raising but would want the other one, too!
