Home birth/Birth center check in?

I don't know how many on this board are planning on home births or a birth center, but I thought it might be nice to have a check in occasionally.  Anyone interested?

Can I play? I'm going to be at a "birthing center" attached to a small local hospital (no free standing birthing centers in this state), but I feel like I belong with this crowd because I am going the low tech unmedicated route.

I'm with a midwifery practice whose epidural rate is in the low teens to single digits. Their section rate is right around 10% too (this is obviously counting the folks that end up with OBs). I've had ONE ultrasound, period that's it, and even that was presented as optional. The most medical thing I've had so far was the 1-hour glucose test.

I wanted a home birth but as a FTM I was a little nervous, plus my HUGE priority was not to be transferred to the crazy high-tech hospital nearest to me, and given where I live that would happen should transfer be needed. I wanted to NOT go there more than I wanted the home birth.

ETA: and yes, a check-in would be great! I am reading lots of Ina May and my MW wants me to check out the hypno-birthing CDs.

  • Birth center for sure. Although on the news today a lady was waiting for her husband to come out of Walmart and she had her baby in the car.... I think I would have just left dh there and drove to the hospital lol.

Whatttttt? :-S Was it local or national?

  • We are planning a homebirth, with a small possibility that I will decide to go the birth center route.

    Either way, no meds.

  • Ugh I would love to deliver at a birth center. Alas, there aren't any on my city. I'll just be jealous of you all from afar.

  • Birth center for now! Depending on my results from the 3 hour GTT and whether it can be controlled, I may end up back eith an OB at a hospital.

I'm planning a med-free hospital birth... I just like to be different. >-)

  • I'd love a med free birth, but I'm not sure it's going to be a viable option with twins who will likely be premies. Was med free with DS. Again in hospital.

FTM here. Birth center birth with midwives and my doula! Would love to conversate more with women who are going the same route as me! I 'feel' judged a lot when med free births are brought up on here so I try to steer clear of getting in the middle of those 'debates' :) so it would be cool to get to know those of you better who are also going med free! I feel like those of us who have educated ourselves enough to make this decision are kind of a 'special community' of women who should stick together. If you couldn't tell I am VERY passionate about natural birth :)

  • I wish we could do a home birth. But we "chickened" out as I'm a FTM and we are a good 30+minutes from a decent hospital in event of emergency. We are planning a med free water birth in the hospital though with a MW and doula.
  • Birthing centre with a MW and medfree. Because of where I live, we have a 3.5 hr drive to the centre.

I ordered it as soon as I got the list just so I wouldn't forget. But I still don't have any of the other stuff so I have plenty to still gather up, like the tablecloth and sheets and towels. It was funny to me to see the peri bottle in the birth kit - haven't seen one of those in almost 11 years!

  • i wanna check in, but alonh with @sassyflats and @jenstwins itll be a med free-natural hospital birth (insurance doesnt cover birth center and nearest one is 45 min away).

Thankfully my hospital really works for natural birth and their standard birthing class encourages it including reviewing different laboring techniques

Oh my! That's a drive. I was worried about 45 minutes. I take it you'll head Out during 1st stage of labor (I'm waiting for 2nd stage)

  • I am also using a birth center connected to a hospital. It is the only one in the area and is still about 35 minutes away. I go to a midwife practice with a few different midwives. Planning to have things as natural as possible, but whatever results in a healthy delivery for baby and for me is what we will go with... We are a roll with the punches kind of couple!
