Unsure if water broke

This morning I was eating breakfast when I felt a small gush- my pajama pants got very wet at the crotch but nothing ran down my legs or anything. I took a shower as planned, and after I put on new clothes I laid down for a bit- no contractions, no more gushing or leaking feeling. I didn't called my ob because I always heard water breaking was either a huge gush or a continuous leak. Baby has been moving a lot today and nothing else has happened but googling now has me scared of possible water breaking and an infection. Anyone able to weigh in? With DS they broke my water post epidural so I have no experience with the feeling.

Re: Unsure if water broke

  • I would just call and see what they say. It can't hurt. FX it's nothing

  • They can do a test to determine if you've got amniotic fluid leaking. Better safe than sorry - I'd say call! It's hard to tell sometimes.

  • FTM so I can't speak from experience, but it doesn't sound like your waters broke. But I'm also not a medical professional. I would say if you're worried to go l&d or leave a message for the on-call doctor at your office. At my hospital tour they told us plenty of women go in to be checked and that they really don't mind- better safe than sorry.

  • If your worried about it I would call L&d. They can test the fluid. It's better to just have it checked then sit and worry about it.

  • The gush sounds suspicious to me. If it were just dampness I would say probably discharge or urine but in this case I would probably go in so they can test it.

  • I would call if you're worried. I thought mine may have broke the other night, but wasn't sure. I had an appt the next morning and brought it up so my ob did the check. Its similar to a pap, was uncomfortable but not painful. She said it's always better to make sure, better safe than sorry!

  • Thanks everyone- I didn't want to call and feel silly but I'm going to call to be safe. I'm only 36 weeks so hopefully it's nothing!

  • I know this sounds gross, but did you smell your undies/pants?  Does it smell like pee?  If it has no scent at all, then it could be fluid. But this late in pregnancy, it's perfectly normal for it to be pee as well if baby kicks just the right spot... that shit can just come right out.  GL mama!

  • I had the same happen to me my dr told me to sit down on toilet or lay in bed and cough really hard if no fluid comes out its not your water if it does its your water... Obviously don't just go with what I said only you can try it to see what happens but call your dr better safe than sorry
  • My fluid smelled like some sort of cleaning solution. Kind of like pine sol but not exactly. They say it smells sweet but mine didn't.

  • I was told to put on a clean pad, drink water, lay on my left side for at least 20 minutes and then get up and check. Apparently, if you have a slow leak, it will pool while you lay down, and come out as you get up. But I would call the dr. as well just to be safe!
  • Check the color too. Mine was definitely pink.

  • If you aren't still having some gushing then I'd say probably not, but it can't hurt to call. Once mine broke there was continuous leakage that never stopped.

  • Mine didn't leak continuously or just when I stood up. It leaked at the most random times. The thing is mine leaked for four weeks so I am in a weird boat.

  • I had this exact issue 7 weeks ago. I went to L&D thinking my water broke. Everything was tight and closed. Turns out the baby just pushed out some pee lol. Never hurts to call this close to DD though.
  • I'm with megs, my water leaked for 19 days. It's usually clear and when I peed, I would smell it. Couldn't distinguish it in the toilet. Laying down usually lowers the amount of fluid leakage, so not sure why your doc would suggest that. I say if you still can't tell, go in and have them do the test. I know once I ruptured, the docs were very worried about the risk of infection. Good luck and keep us updated.
