Naive FTM Q Re: Mattress Pads

Hi Ladies,

I'm hoping you can help me with a naive FTM question… our crib mattress has a protective cover on it (the fabric is waterproof already, kind of a vinyl type); I then got a crib sheet to put over it. My question is, do I still need a mattress pad/cover as well? Most that I've seen are to make things waterproof, and our mattress already is. Then there are some that are cushioned, but the mattress is supposed to be firm, correct?

I feel like this is a captain obvious question, but I just wanted to make sure there isn't something I'm not aware of! Thanks for your help :)

  • We never used one since the mattress was already vinyl/waterproof. We won't be using one this time either.

We used one because when the baby pees out the diaper (or has a "poopisode") the mattress pad underneath would absorb some of the wet instead of smearing it more over the sheet. Smearing it more over the sheet meant it got more over baby. My kids didn't usually wake up for wet sheets (very frustrating).

ETA: I should add that the mattress pad we used had a waterproof lining, but a cloth top. It didn't make the crib "cushy", but it wasn't waterproof on the top. We got them from Target.

  • I am so glad someone asked this. Our mattress is waterproof too, and I have from showers and such a cover that goes over the mattress and under the sheet, and also pads that are tied to the crib bars over the sheet (under the baby's bottom, I guess?) for extra protection. I have no idea if any of this stuff is necessary and have a feeling it might be overkill, but I haven't thought to ask if I should return/exchange any of this stuff for something else I might get more use out of.

  • I would definitely recommend putting something between the sheet and the mattress for the MOTN diaper explosions or sicknesses. It'll be so much easier to toss the sheet and mattress protector in the dirty laundry and put 2 clean ones down then have to clean off the whole mattress before putting down a clean sheet, even if it is water proof.

    This, exactly.

Ditto. I would hate to have to clean up a big mess in the middle of the night, especially with a crying and messy baby who needs a bath herself. Our mattress is waterproof and my plan is to have on top of it a waterproof mattress pad, then crib sheet, then Waterproof mattress pad (I found them sold in 2-packs), then another crib sheet. Sounds like a lot, but I'm sure DH or I will be grateful one night to just rip the top two layers off and throw them in the laundry and be able to lay baby back down.

Someone recommended this to me.  I have waterproof mattress pad, crib sheet, waterproof mattress pad, and crib sheet on the crib's mattress.  I will be thankful I did this the first time a diaper explosion happens in the middle of the night!
