Question about reflux and what pedi said

So my DD has been spitting up more than normal so I mentioned it to her and she gave me some tips on how to prevent it. She said if it was still happening we would discuss it further and told me if it was reflux that I would have to mix rice cereal with my breastmilk...I was like aren't you not supposed to do that?? Just curious as to what you ladies think? I thought it was weird for her to say that :/

Re: Question about reflux and what pedi said

  • Was just reading about reflux on Mayo Clinic bc DD appears to have it just like DS did and it mentions that not only is thickening milk no longer recommended but wouldn't work with breast milk anyway because the starch would get broken down and milk would thin out.

Well then idk if I should be listening to mmy daughters pedi... I should probably look up if there are any different a alternatives. Idk how to go about telling her I would rather not take her advice. I just want what's best for my baby :( . Thank you
  • Yeah...that's why I was questioning it. I asked and she said it thickened it..hopefully the recommendations she gave me work and DD doesn't end up having reflux
  • Thank yall. Yes so far we have kept her up right and feeding less more often and it has worked!
  • DS1 had severe reflux... His pedi called it GERD on steroids... Don't mix cereal into bottles, especially this young... Ask to be referred to a pediatric gastrointetnologist (GI Doc). They may be able to pinpoint the cause if the reflux since it sounds like your pedi is a little behind the curve there or just hasn't had patients with much reflux...

  • Adding cereal to formula is still a recommendation for gerd in infants (on the nih site and others)...but not adding it to breastmilk, that's a lil wonky
  • Wow. Sad that a bunch of non medically trained people on the bump know more about what not to do with a young baby than your pediatrician. Get a new ped IMO.

  • And cereal can be added to breastmilk, it just won't stayed thickened for long because breastmilk will start to digest the carbs in the cereal. It can be done but needs to be fed immediately.
  • My lo was in NICU and diagnosed with grade 4+ ( on a scale of 1-4) reflux. He was having apnea spells from it. The NICU doctors had me add some rice cereal to about an ounce of my pumped milk before breastfeeding. After starting that the apnea spells stopped before he was discharged after a few days of watching him on the monitor. We are also holding him upright for about 30 minutes after each feeding. I was also having to supplement with formula and we uses the Similac spit up formulation when I didn't have enough milk pumped for him. He's a big kid and was eating 4 oz at one week of age. He's doing fine now at 5 weeks.
  • Sigh...I know it is sad :( well like I said so far she hasn't spit up so I'm pretty sure she doesn't have it!!
  • My lo didn't spit up either. He just stopped breathing. You need to have open communication with your doctor about your concerns. He/she can't address them and clearly give you their opinion if you are open with them.
