Toddlers: 24 Months+

Miralax long term??

my son will be 2 this month and has been having poop issues. He either has little sharts or high turds, and has a rash and hates to be wiped. Dr. RX'd an enema and miralax. She wants him to take it for about 6 months. I am not sure how safe this is or how I feel about it! I am going to do some extensive research about it, but I thought I would throw it out to you mommies and daddies too! What are your thoughts on the extended use of miralax? thanks!!

Re: Miralax long term??

  • My daughter has been on Miralax regularly for 3 months now - she takes it twice a day, ever since she was constipated for 8 days straight and ended up in the ER.  At her 3 year check up last month, I asked if there were any effects from long term Miralax use, and her pedi said no, it's perfectly safe.  Miralax is not absorbed into the system at all. It merely acts as extra water molecules to make things..."softer".

That being said, I would eventually like to "wean" her off the Miralax; the doctor suggested doing Benefiber once a day to replace one of her Miralax doses.  But I know plenty of kids, even a 7 year old, who is on it regularly with no bad consequences.  I'm just petrified to stop giving it to DD because she is super prone to constipation and I don't want to end up in the ER again!

  • I weaned DD off of it because she started needing larger and larger doses to get the same results. The doctor just kept telling me to give her larger and larher doses. I didn't feel comfortable with that large of doses daily. I did some research on-line and started giving her flaxseed oil. It worked really well and now she no longer requires anything to stay regular. If you start Miralax be careful not to stop cold-turkey because it will cause horrible constipation!

  • Personally I would have discussed holistic options first before going right to meds. For example constipation can sometimes easily be remedied by a higher fiber diet, drinking ice water, blueberries, etc.
  • Cherryblossom- how are you administering the flaxseed oil to your toddler? I used it when the rice cereal necessary for DS's reflux was constipating him, but i just dumped it in his bottle. How do you get your toddler to take it? I'd also like to wean DD off the Miralax b/c she also is needing a larger and larger dose (up from 1/2 a cap to a full cap a day) to keep things moving.

  • June- I wish the high fiber diet would have been enough for my DD. We tried it on the rec of the Gastro but DD still ended up impacted AGAIN.

I added it to her juice/water. It made little oil spots on the top of the liquid, but she never saw it because she always drank from a closed cup at that time. It does change the taste a little because if I put too much in she would complain. I started with adding a very little bit to her juice/water and gradually added more until she started complaing about the taste.

  • Thanks so much for the tip. I just tried putting it in her milk tonight but she tasted it and made a face. I made it into chocolate milk (a rare treat in our house) and she is drinking it right up. Here's hoping it helps! I'd really like to get her off the Miralax.
