no babblers??

My 1st didn't crawl until a year and didn't walk until 17 months, so I was prepared this time around to not stress over those milestones seeing as she turned out just fine :). Now my 2nd is crawling and working on pulling up, but has very little in the verbal aspects. he turned 9 months yesterday and still  No mama or da da or any consonant sounds for that matter.  My pediatrician was very laid back and didn't over react with my 1st and her slow gross motor progression, so I am interested to see what she has to say on Tues. when we go for DS's well check.

Any other no babblers out there who have already been to their 9 month well?

Re: no babblers??

  • I think babies tend to work more on either motor skills or verbal development.  Right now your son is busy with motor skills.  I bet verbal will come soon after he masters his current set of skills, just like your dd mastered her motor skills after she probably figured out verbal skills more in that time where she was "delayed" for lack of a better term.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • We babble but not much for words like mama.  At our appt yesterday the pedi wasn't too concerned.  (he said he didn't speak until he was 3) He suggested I read to her more often though and that might help move her forward.

  • My older son wasn't a big babbler but he made tons of raspberries! His first word was at 16 months and now he DOESN'T STOP TALKING! My baby seems on the same path. Sometimes I see him make movements with his mouth like he is chewing or whispering which I think gets their little mouths in practice, too.
  • Will will "talk" but no mama or dada here yet. Randomly while driving il here ba ba ba being yelled from the back seat.

  • We had our 9 month appt the other day.  We have no consonants either which the pedi said should start happening around 6 months.  She said that it can be a sign of autism however given G engages people, smiles, makes eye contact, etc. She wasn't concerned.  She said if there is still nothing by her 12 month appt she would send her to an early intervention specialist, but she said she truly believes that there is nothing wrong and it would just be precautionary.

I have seen some of the same mouth movements you describe, with no sound, starting yesterday.

He also smiles, laughs, and engages. But no babbling, waving or pointing. His sister, being such a late mover was very verbal so this is very different. I have a feeling my pediatrician will say to wait until 12 months as well.
At 3 weeks olds saw an audiologist as a routine follow up after his heart surgery and stay in the NICU, so I think that would rule out any hearing connections.
  • Rhys went from absolutely no consonants to babbling consonants maybe a week ago. He went from ONLY making sounds like "aah" to saying "mamama, baba, dada, bwa," etc. Literally overnight. So don't worry too much :-)
