My LO has a hemangioma on her upper back between shoulder blades. I thought it was a birth mark at first then it started to raise. The doctor said to think of it just like a birth mark, but that it will start to disappear after the age of 1 until it's completely gone.
Zoe has hemangioma on the side of her face, the left side of her chest and back and arm. She's on medication and from what her specialist can say it looks like it's an inactive one because unlike @MegStark's it's actually flat and it just looks like red veins instead of a patch. You can only notice it on her face if i point it out. We're also hoping it'll disappear when she gets older.
@AlejandraN2 - I know others that have had hemangiomas as well. They were all gone by the age of 3 or 4. Either way, nothing to worry about if they're harmless Curious though... what's the medication for?
@MegStark it's called Propranorol and it's typically given to manage blood pressure and heart issues. They accidentally discovered a few years ago that it's actually incredibly successful in treating aggressive hemangiomas. Hemangiomas can also exist on internal organs (Zoe has a flat one in her trachea), which can be dangerous if they become raised. She was prescribed propranorol to treat both the blood pressure and hemangioma issues and so far it's working (it's either faded completely or just stayed stable). A 2 for 1 deal if you will
Probably more info that you wanted to know, but there you go.
Jackson has "angel kisses" on his forehead and one of his eyelids. The pedi said she expects them to disappear by the time he's 2. He also has a "stork bite" but his hair covers it so I forget about it all time.
DS has a hemangioma on his chest....pedi said by age two it would disappear...he's 20 months and it is definitely less red and less puffy but it is still there. My last apt with the pedi she said more like by age ten. Doesn't bother me really but I think sometimes Pedi's will tell you it will disappear by age one or two just to make you feel better about it.
Summer is like a giant birthmark. She has small red stork bites between her eyes, they're very light and almost unnoticeable. Then there are two huge red birth marks on the back of her head and stork bites on her neck. She has one giant strawberry on her chest and a smaller one on her back. It's crazy! Oh, and not that it's a birthmark, but she has two scars on her ankle from her iv in the nicu.
I swear that DS had a third nipple when he was born. The nurse called it a skin tag. Oddly enough, it fell off when he was about a month old.
DS had one of these on his chest when he was born but sometime between the time he was born and going home from the hospital it was gone. Not sure what happened to it.
Maybe there's a Triple Nipple Fairy that swings by and steals third nipples from little boys.
Hi- lurker here, I posted my LO's health story about a month ago regarding her subglottic hemangioma. My daughter was to the point where she couldn't breathe because the hemangioma was blocking 85% of her airway. My LO is also on Propranolol. Question @AlejandraN2- have you had any side effects with the medication? My LO's hair has fallen out, it looks like we shaved her head. Just curious...
DS has a hemangioma on his leg, it's pretty big. But he also has a birthmark on his scalp.

No we haven't really seen any side effects. One of the most common reported, is lower blood sugar so when they gave it to her in the hospital they had to monitor her to make sure it didn't affect her negatively. She's on the minimum dose and the same one she was when she was born (half the size she is now) so I'm not sure it's even doing anything any more. But it could be that your LO's hair falling is a coincidence. Did you talk to your doctor about it? And is your little one doing better on the drug?
No birthmarks, but for those with hemangiomas.. I had a large and very obvious one on my forehead. It started as a dot, then got big/purple/swollen and was worst around the 1yr mark, then slowly started going away to the point that it wasn't noticeable in 3rd or 4th grade. I say this because my mom was really torn on whether or not she should have it removed because it looked bad and she was worried about the comments. The doctor told her that the scar tissue would be permanent and far worse than waiting it out. Sure enough, no one can tell that I had it now unless the light hits it just right.
DS has Mongolian spots on his little butt! I guess they are common in Hispanic/Oriental heritages which DH has both of. They fade with time and they look like bruises. I think they're kind of cute and give his little bottom character!

Yes, her pediatrician said is was due to her medication in combination with normal hair fall out. She has to take 1ml every 8 hours for now, and I have to take her in every 2 weeks so they can adjust the dosage to her weight. Yes, she is a new baby!
My son has an unusual birth mark on the side of his forehead. It's a little darker than his skin and raised. He also has one on his thigh that is below the skin that comes and goes. They are both unusual (to me) so I took him to a pediatric dermatologist. He also has the smallest little mole that I think could turn into a birth mark on his leg in the same place that my H has his (which I find super cute)

Oh good I'm so glad! Our dose is 0.1ML every 8 hours - that's why i think it's not doing much
LO has three. A "stork bite", one on her left shin, and what looks like a ear piercing on her right ear. The nurse kept saying it may have been where her ear was folded when I was pregnant with her but its stil there and just looks like her ears are pierced I think it's cute.
Jocelyn has a red one on her butt cheek. She also has a little one on her upper left thigh that's tan. So I often think she has a rash or poop on her leg!
