  • Our handout from our 12 month well check said to take baby to the dentist, but the pedi didn't actually talk to us about it.  Also interested in what others say...
  • She has her first appointment scheduled in a few weeks. We see a pediatric dentist and she recommends 6-8 months after the first tooth.

  • Ours said first appointment should be about 3 years old, so we haven't gone yet.  Are people going to a pediatric dentist or a family dentist?

  • Our pedi said wait till around 2, as long as they don't drink milk or nurse in the middle of the night you are fine with just brushing their teeth.  Any younger and it is a waste no child would most likely let a dentist in their mouth and even at 2 it is to get your LO used to going to the dentist.

  • DCF in Connecticut has gotten really crazy when it comes to kids seeing the dentist and now wants kids seen by 18mnths!!  My daughter went with me the other day (same day as her 18mnth pedi appointment) and she sat on my lap the whole time and watched what happened.  The hygienist asked her to open her mouth toward the end and called that her first exam!!
  • I work in a dental office and most things you read say between 6 months and a year.  But I personally think that's a little early. I think 2 is a good age to start.  I'm taking DS this month and he will be 21 months old.  I'm mainly taking him because we have dental insurance on him and to try to get him use to going.
  • I'm taking DD for the first time later this month and she will be 3 on the 28th.  I'll take DS too (16 mos) but only because I'm already taking her.  Our Pedi said don't worry till 3.
  • Our ped dentist recommends going around 15 mo. They basically counted her teeth, talked about brushing, switching from bottle to cup to straw cup and did a fluoride treatment b/c we don't have fluoride in our water. DS will be going at around 18 mo when DD goes back for her visit.

  • We had to take DD at 15 months because she feel and chipped her right front tooth. Luckily they were able to bond it but I do not have to go back till she is 2. They did use a pappoose and she cried (which helped to see her entire mouth) but they we very friendly and were singing to her. Once she was out of the pappoose she walked out like nothing had happened. :)
  • Both my dentist and DS' pediatrician said at age 3 we should take him to the dentist. neither thought it was necessary before ther unless there is a concern

  • Our dentist said it wasn't important until age 3 unless you notice a problem. Our ped hasn't mentioned the dentist at all.

  • DD was a little over 3.  My insurance won't put them on until they're 2.  I took her to a pediatric dentist because I hate the dentist so much I wanted it to go as smoothly as possible.  I was shocked how good she was, I talked it up and she was actually looking forward to it.

    Exactly this.

  • My dentist said they don't really need to do much before three unless there's a problem. But DS's pediatrician is participating in a dental intervention program that tries to screen at-risk children for cavities and offer preventive care, like fluoride varnish, so I expect that his well-child checks will include some level of dental care until he starts seeing a dentist regularly.
  • Thanks, think the consensus is to wait til 2 or 3. DD has an appt with pediatrician this week so I will mention it.  I guess I just figured she has so many teeth that we needed to take her.  So I guess I will be taking her not long after our new baby is born, yes I just found out we are pregnant!  Happy 'New Year'!

  • I asked my dentist when I should bring my son for his first visit, and he said 3.  But in the meantime to brush his teeth twice a day (i'm not that diligent about it), and not to give him any juice.

  • Our area has been pushing within 6 months of the first tooth coming in, or by the first birthday. I still haven't made an appointment.
  • I asked my dentist. He said most pediatrician start sending kids to the dentist at 2 but that there's really nothing for them to do until 3.

  • Our pedi suggested 2 (more so to get him used to going). He said he wouldn't recommend any earlier than that unless there was a concern. I called a couple pediatric dentists when we were checking them out and they said exactly the same thing. It's more of a lap visit at that point anyway. I would hold off for awhile, just make sure you are brushing her teach.
