fifths disease?

LO has a red cheek, has had it for a few days now. He is not showing signs of teething nor does he have a fever or seem to be in any discomfort. I read it might be fifths disease, which should just run its course. What do you guys think? Should I bring him to the doctor anyway? I am in Canada...so it's free but I would have to deal with walk in and potentially he could pick up something actually worse...

Re: fifths disease?

  • You could always call the office, but if the red cheek is the only symptom I wouldn't be too concerned. My DS often has red cheeks and they seem to have many causes. But it never hurts to call and check, especially before the weekend starts!

  • Connor has had red cheeks since winter has started. It goes away sometimes and appears even though he hasn't been outside. If you are truly worried then call and check, only you can be the judge of your gut feeling. If it was only the cheeks, I wouldn't be concerned too much and put aquaphor on it for a few days and see if it gets better. If not then I would check it out.

  • I would not worry about it. Vworst case, it's fifths disease which is not harmful to your child anyway. If there's no other symptoms, I wouldn't waste your time.
