DH or SO pass out during labor?

My husband passed out as he was holding my leg up, right before the last push ( I pushed for 20 minutes, mind you... Not a marathon). No one was in the immediate vicinity when he said he was going down (which was nice of him) so my ob had to hold my epidural numb leg up with her shoulder as she extracted the child, nuchal cord and all (she's fuggin awesome). He immediately came to and saw our DS lol. He says he's sure this happens all the time...any other dramatic DH/SO stories? Lol

  • Your poor DH! I was worried my H would pass out the first time I was in labor but he did surprisingly well. He just didn't look at much!

  • My DH almost did which is strange because he wasn't like that when DS1 was born. He literally had to walk away a couple times. When DS came out he didn't even want to cut the cord. He looked green. I think it was because I had to go natural this time (they kept getting my epi in the wrong spot and my heart rate and bp would skyrocket each time they did it) and he was freaked by me yelling about how bad it burned lol
  • Mine did not, however I remember hearing a story from my cousin that her DH did pass out during her first delivery and had to be wheeled out of the room
  • DH had a moment when he almost went down when we were first admitted. I was only 32 weeks and we went from thinking I was over reacting to getting swat teamed in a finger snap. Once they found out I was already dialted 5 cm a team of people descended and started sticking me with all kinds of things. He said he got a little woozy at that point more from the shock of "oh shit, this is real!"
  • Mine almost passed out but not from looking (he's a firefighter/EMT so it didn't bother him)... I did a med-free delivery and grabbed his neck for the last push when he bent over to kiss me/tell me I was almost done. When I grabbed him I didn't let go until baby came out! Poor thing couldn't break free and I couldn't let go. *lol*

I had a cyst on the placenta that we were monitoring all pregnancy and I asked to see it. The dr showed me then turned to show DH. He quickly turned and had to step away. He doesn't deal well with anything medical so he did not look or cut the cord with DS or DD.

  • My cousins husband had to throw up so much from nerves during her delivery that he couldn't hold her leg and didn't see his daughter being born. He also said he was thisclose to passing out. Luckily her mom and nurse were there to hold her legs.
My dh is fine with medical stuff but he chose not to cut the cord this time and always talks about how gross the placenta is haha.

  • DH didn't pass out during, but with DD when the pedi came by to check on her the next morning, he hit the deck in the bathroom at the thought of her having to have surgery {the doc said she might have an issue, but she didn't} and being in pain. He was fine this time, but she loves hearing the story about how her daddy was so worried he passed out. :)
  • My labor was going extremely well and I wasn't feeling much pain, so DH decided to take a nap. While he was sleeping, I started to feel intense pain (med free with Pitocin) and it was decided I would need a c section. My mom woke him up to this news and he was so confused by the whole situation (I was vomiting and crying and everyone was getting ready to take me to the OR) that he almost passed out and my mom ended up having to go in with me for the c section.

  • Your poor DH! I thought DH was gonna be woozy for sure, but he was surprisingly okay. He actually watched DD being born.

  • My husband was squeamish, and my OB warned him (in a friendly way) to not pass out, because we were the patients, not him. Then, OB nearly made him pass out with his comment post delivery, "you did so well I expect you back in a year."

  • My DH didn't, but my dad did when I was born :-)

Also my uncle nearly did when his 1st was born...

So I'm pretty sure it's common!

My step dad hit the floor when he saw my mom get the epi needle when she was in labor with my sister. It happens a lot when it comes to that, which is why some hospitals won't allow anyone else in there except for medical staff when doing that (that and it has to be a sterile environment). I've never heard of anyone going down while the pushing is going on though, LOL, it's almost all over at that point! LOL

My DH is good at covering his anxiety by thinking his funny and joking with the nurses about cows and horses giving birth. He actually had his head all up in there while DD was being born. He wanted to see everything! ...'Til my OB's face went white, I went pale, and my blood pressure and blood oxygen level dropped drastically (I was going into shock because of a pretty nasty hemorrhage). This time, my OB stopped everything just so he could see, but he was like, once you've seen it once, you don't really have to see it again. I freaked him out this time though because when they postponed our induction, I was talking about going over to the ranch, breaking my water with a stick, and having DS manger-style. LOL.

Two babies, 11 months apart! We're in for a ride!
  • They had me lean on dh for my epidural and kept checking that he didn't feel like he was going to pass out. I guess that's very common. Can you imagine the person you're leaning on falling over as you're getting the epidural needle being inserted? *shudder*

With my first daughter he got a bit green and asked if "it was supposed to look like that" as I was pushing her out. So not what I wanted to hear at the time lol. He didn't pass out though.
