Large yolk sac and baby b measuring behind?

Has anyone had these results from their NT scan and everything be ok? They called to tell me baby B's yolk sac was abnormally large and that he/she was measuring 4 days behind A. I am 13 weeks. I have to wait 2 weeks for the blood work to come back but I'm obviously really worried and upset. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Large yolk sac and baby b measuring behind?

  • I have had baby B measure 3 days behind A at my NT scan, they said it was completely normal.  As far as the sac situation I am not sure what that means, but I don't think it is an indicator of a genetic disorder or not.  Did they offer any more details? Good luck and keep us posted!

  • I don't recall them measuring or commenting on my yolk sac at that scan so can't speak to that. Not sure what it would mean either.
At my 6 week scan they measured the same, at 8 weeks one measured 4 days ahead of the other. At my NT scan baby A measured 11w4d and baby B measured 12w4d...and three days later at my regular OB appt she scanned super fast and said they were each at 12w2d. I've just accepted they are totally doing their own thing in there.
I wouldn't worry about measuring 4 days apart- many babies do (or a bit more!) and do just fine.

  • I had one twin, baby B, always measuring two days behind. Not sure about the sac though.
  • Maybe you are referring to the gestational sac or chorionic sac? The sac surrounding the baby? The yolk sac usually disappears around 10 weeks so at a 12 week scan it wouldn't be present.
Discrepancies in measurement can be pretty common in twin pregnancies and 4 days is not significant at all.  Hopefully your next scan will be more reassuring.

  • I ended up back there today and the yolk sac was gone and the doctor today was pissed that they made a big deal of it! The babies are now a day apart and the yolk sac was gone!! She still did the materniT 21 but felt really positive!
