Frozen tundra of the north ladies

So DS has his 6m appointment Monday. The high is like 1 or something. Wind chill is supposed to be between -10 and -20. I don't know how to do this baby thing with temps that cold. We don't have the outerwear for that. So what do you do? Just thick layers, hat and then blankets with a blanket over the top to stop the wind?  Coats are obviously a no go but I don't feel like my normal blankets will do the trick. Tips??

I'm thinking of you @kaylakim

Oh and btw, how did it go with your boss yesterday? Did I miss an update?

Re: Frozen tundra of the north ladies

  • We are in the same boat (as far as the frozen tundra of the Northeast). If I had to bring LO out I would do the hat, scarf, dressed warm, with a thick blanket to keep her warm and a thick blanket over the whole car seat to the car. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!!

  • Same boat here in NY. We do a hat and many blankets. We warm the car first and spend ads little time outside ad possible.

  • Yep. I do layers with a thick blanket to shield baby from the wind. It shouldn't be too much time outside right? Like it's just from your car to the office door?

We do this as well. Or we keep him in the seat with the cover up with extra blankets on top. This kind of cold is no joke. Frostbite on any exposed skin pretty fast. High of -11 Monday plus a worse windchill. I use a few blankets and just run. If it's possible you could try and reschedule?

  • Same as PP's already mentioned. Hat for sure. I do a couple layers of blanket over LO, but only leave 1 layer on once we're settled in the car, so she doesn't overheat. Hopefully you don't have to be outside for a long period of time!

The high in Chicagoland on Monday is -11. It's just not right.

  • Thanks for thinking of me @meismx!

It's freaking cold here and funny youshould ask about taking kids to doctors appointments. Eli just had his 6 month check up this morning. We are in a blizzard warning and have below zero temps with even colder wind chills. I still have him in his plastic bucket with a cover over it. He wears a fleece zipper jacket, hat, his swaddle blanket all tucked inside. When we go outside I pull his cover over his head and put another blanket on top then I shuffle across the parking lot as fast as I can! Lots of people use their strollers but I think that takes too long. Scarlett just runs alongside me and is such a trooper!

You'll be fine but this cold weather really sucks and I'm already dreaming of spring or at least 40 F temps!

Thanks for asking about yesterday too with my boss. I was going to post an update but she didn't say anything and acted as though nothing had happened. I played along and am not bringing it up to her until I'm ready or unless she asks. Such an awkward situation though!

    Good luck Monday! Stay warm!

  • I think warming the car is key. This morning it was 6. 6? This is Boston it shouldn't be that cold! I dressed the baby in a sweater and then a (light-does not require moving the straps) fleece suit. Wrapped a blanket around her and hauled ass to the car and then to daycare.

  • DS was supposed to have his 6 month appt Monday too. It's supposed to be -6 for a high. I rescheduled. His 6 month appointment can wait a few days for it to warm up a bit. I live in Ohio so it does get cold, but negative temps are crazy.

  • I'm in Canada.. We add a zip-up sweater over whatever he's wearing, hat, mitts, knit blanket if it's really cold and then shower cap cover.

  • We are in Connecticut. I agree with PPs - thick or multiple blankets and a hat. We also double up on socks sometimes. She doesn't leave them on but at least she has them for the time we are outside. Also- warming up the car is a must!

  • It's suppose to be a high of -9 here on Monday.
I would warm up the car first. Use gloves (or socks) on LOs hands and a hat, with lots of blankets. Do you have anything that goes under LO? I know you're not suppose to use this but it would be way to cold for LO without it https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4282476&cp=2255957.2273443.2256187.3225213.3225217&parentPage=family. I would use blankets over it as well, and one stuffed inside. Dress LO warm too.
Hoepfully you don't have to be out too long. Good luck!!

  • I would reschedule.

When the Gov is planning to call school off statewide...thats a sign to just stay in.  I try to avoid taking J out as much as I can when its below zero.
  • I'm so glad you asked this! We have an appointment for make-up 6m shots on Monday. First thing in the morning (to avoid germs, of course!), so it won't have had time to warm up to 1F. I want to cry just typing that. And then we have more appointments every day next week.

I'm definitely going to make DH swap cars with me so I can have the remote start. And I guess just pile on all the blankets? I bought him a winter coat because it's adorable, but of course it won't work in the car seat. It's such a short trip from house to car and car to doctor - like 30 feet. He can't freeze in 30 feet, can he?

We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
  • I should add...that when I do take her out...

I dress her in a warm sleeper.  Put on a hat and tuck a blanket around her after shes all buckled in.  We have a thick car seat cover (cozy cover I believe) .  For the average winter day shes usually nice and cozy and even sweaty sometimes.  If its super windy and yucky then I put a blanket over the handle to block the wind from getting in the little flap of the carseat cover.

  • Now how would you dress a baby for a 30 minute walk to/from daycare in the same weather? I won't have to walk with LO on Monday, but DH is going to need the car (we only have one) for a month beginning the following Monday. Hopefully we won't have a repeat of this weather, but I want to be prepared just in case. I usually babywear using a Beco Soleil. I'm seriously scared to walk with LO in that kind of weather. :(
Oh that sounds awful. We only have the one car as well or I would totally pick you up. At least in the mornings. I second the cab idea. Yikes.

  • It's -31 with the windchill here. We just had our 6m appt yesterday, and I went out today to run some errands with him so this is what we do.

I put him in a thin North Face suit I received as a gift first. Here's the link to it - it's seriously amazingly warm and NOT thick so it's fine for a car seat. I'd never pay full price...actually, with the amount of use I've gotten out of this brilliant thing I actually might pay full price. Anyways, here's the link: https://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/infant-buttery-fleece-bunting.html?variationId=FN4&variationName=TNF%20WHITE

I also put a hat on him. And then we have one of these car seat covers. My MIL found it at Target in the clearance bin for $5. https://jjcolecollections.com/car-seat-cover

It goes over like a shower cap and is thick, and I can close the flap when we're outside.

When I'm in the stroller seat and not the car seat, I use two blankets on top in leiu of the car seat cover - I have a thicker wool one I'll wrap him in, and then a fleece one. I also lay a fleece blanket underneath him in the stroller seat. He's always toasty warm.

  • DS 6 month appt is Monday as well. The high is supposed to be 3 degrees so I plan on warming car, hat, fleece jacket, over carrier fleece cover, and a blanket. Its a short walk to doc office from car and I have an attached garage so I am still going to go. On top of it we are getting 8-10 inches of snow Sunday. Urggggg

  • Freezing here in eastern PA too. Three degrees right now. I was complaining to DH yesterday about how stupid this no heavy coat thing is. I mean, I get it but technically, can't the same argument be made for adults, puffy coats and seat belts? I hate feeling like E isn't warm enough. :(

I don't wear coats in the car for myself either. We all wear fleece and keep the heavy coats in the car in case of an emergency. Also, it's super uncomfortable.
