Giving up pacifier?

At what point are you planning on taking away the pacifier? I've heard 12 months, but that's so soon!! I certainly don't want him to be using it by 2 years, but don't have a cut off date yet.

Re: Giving up pacifier?

  • I don't plan on taking it away anytime soon. I had my pacifier till I was 3 and I don't care if my kids have theirs that long (only at bedtime/naps once they reach a certain age of course).

We also only use ours for sleep and in the car. I asked the pediatrician about it at the 9 month appointment and she said because we already use it sparingly, then not to worry about it. She was more concerned about transitioning from bottle to cups at one.

ETA - So we aren't planning on taking it away in the foreseeable future!

  • Thanks! I think we'll definitely start working on limiting his pacifier use :)
  • My lo pretty much gave it up already on her own.. So now I just don't offer it and she doesn't care :)

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • We only use it during night time and car rides, we are going to try to take it away when we come back from our vacation this summer.  I want her to have the comfort piece at grandma and grandpas while we are gone.  She goes to their house during the day, but has never stayed the night.  Im really stressed about it, and its not till July.  I have no idea how I am going to leave

  • DD1 is 2.5 and still uses hers. We're cutting back on it, but she is a paci-addict.

DD2 gave it up on her own almost completely at about 7 months except for when we were on walks, and she stopped with that when she was about 8 months old, despite my attempts to shove it in her mouth (she has started moving to thumb-sucking, which I find infinitely worse).

Oh, and we didn't get rid of bottles for DD1 until she was 26 months old. We took her to the dentist in the fall and her teeth are fine. I have no guilt.

Dd may have just given up her bottle a few weeks ago.... Her teeth are great. She never liked the pacifier. With DS, he really only uses it to fall asleep, and not even every time. I will probably try to get rid of it around 2. He isn't emotionally attached to the bottle, so it is gone when we finish using formula. I am not having a bottle sleep association again.

DD2 has a serious one. Yippee. And since 2 months ago, she will not take a bottle except when she's in bed for a nap. Or possibly in the stroller where she can also use it to fall asleep. Otherwise there are way too many other things to do and see and touch and eat.

Honestly, though, I'm just going to keep giving her a bottle after she turns one. Meh. After months and months of having to get up 6+ times / night, for the last 6 weeks she gets up 0, 1 or max 2 times. I'm not stupid enough to mess with that, tyvm.

    This.
  • With DS1 we took it away at 13 months.  DS2 wouldn't take one.  With DD1 we never took it away and she eventually lost interest around her second birthday - although she was only using it for naps and bedtime so it was easier to get over, I think.  DD2 won't take one.
