Constipation :/

Hi, I'm 27 weeks today, and I am super constipated. I haven't went for a week or two now. I've tried mirilax, coffee, apple juice, etc. Help?? What can I do for fast relief? My stomach is so bloated and hard.

Hot water & Lemon?? I would have said Miralax but you already tried that.. that usually does it. Try some walking to move things around?

Can you call the OB and see what laxative you can take? I think Colace is ok to take but I'm not 100% sure

ETA: I didn't realize miralax was. Laxative lol pregnancy brain.

Prune juice and lots of walking really help me. Start out slow (one glass at a time) with the prune juice, it can be really powerful. I also prefer it chilled.

Thank you everyone! I called my OB to see if there is anything else I can try.. Waiting on a call back of course. I can't imagine prune juice taste at all good, but I guess I am desperate right?? Lol

A week?!  Good lord I think I would explode.  And Miralax didn't work...hmmm...You might want to get in to see your doctor ASAP or go to urgent care- you could be impacted.  GL.

Haha agree with pp... I didn't go for over a week during my first tri and I did almost explode!! It was awful, I had to call my doctor too and she told me at that point, I needed to take a max dose of milk of magnesia and a TON of water. Sure enough within a couple hours I was feeling much better. After that, I just maintained a high fiber diet and I was mostly ok. Lately I found that when I eat a pear or two (I love them) everyday, I have absolutely no issues.

I've been struggling terribly with this since becoming pregnant.

When things starts getting worrisome (i.e. not going for almost an entire week or more) I take 4 tbsp of Milk of Magnesia and that works overnight for me.  Sometimes that's what I need to "kick-start" my digestive tract and I will be able to go on my own for a while afterwards.  Otherwise you can take stool softeners regularly to try and help also.  Colace is on the list from my midwife of things that are OK to take.

Prune juice does work for me, but it also gives me awful cramps and gas.  Just make sure whatever method you try, you drink lots of water with it!

Had this exact problem and talked to my OB today at my appointment. He told me for a more instant relief to get milk of magnesia and then continue daily on Metamucil.

Lol, it's actually been closer to 2 weeks. My nurse seemed concerned and is talking to my dr and calling me back.. I hope she calls soon this is terrible.

Whatever you end up taking/trying, also try rubbing your belly to help get stuff moving around.

Update- my dr said use a fleet enema and if it doesn't work go to the ER. Could be an impacted stool.
  • Options
The enema did not work so I was in the hospital last night.. They gave me a soap sud enema and prescribed colace and mirilax daily for a couple days then colace every day.

I've used Fiber Therapy. Take 5 capsules with plenty of water and BAM! No more constipation:) Works for me every time. Good luck!

I use this too now! Start with a teaspoon and adjust from there! You don't want any surprises!

My OB told me Colace or Pericolace is a yes. I took it and felt like I lost five pounds lol

When I get really backed up, I'll have a handful of prunes, some Metamucil or Benefiber, and milk.  Sometimes, a milkshake will knock it free.  I am prone to constipation due to IBS, so I really have to watch it.  When I wasn't eating so well (carbs, not enough fiber), I had real issues.  Ugh

I found prenatal vitamins that have added fiber in them and I take those. I also take something called Swiss Kriss (all natural) which I took before I got pregnant too. I have stayed regular throughout the pregnancy but I know it's because of these. Good luck. I hope you get relief ASAP

few weeks back i was super constipated for like 5 or 6 days. since then ive started drinking 1 or 2 glasses of pure fruit juice everyday and not had any re occurrence so far

Miralax and Colace both didn't work for me but the fleet glycerin suppositories did. Glad you were able to get relief at the ER!

I haven't went since the ER, and I've been taking colace and mirilax since then. And even prune juice :(.... Wish I knew what this meant!!

OP how much water are you drinking? If you increase your fiber and/or add laxatives sometimes they can really stop you up if you aren't drinking crap tons of water as in holy moly amounts. Dried fruit like apricots helped me as well.

A cup of caffeinated coffee helps me, as does exercise. I also take one Senokot-S every morning.

Have you tried Metamucil? I have been taking it for about amonth now and it is my best friend. I only take one scoop a day and it has been working for me. It is not a laxative so it won't MAKE you go, but makes it comfortable and easy to go when you need to.
