Baby in 95th percentile!

Just got back from the doctors. Baby girl looks great, but we were told she is in the 95th percentile. All I can think is holy crap. I don't want a 10 pound baby! The doctor told me to keep exercising. Anyone have experience with this?

Re: Baby in 95th percentile!

  • It is very early to be estimating growth since they kind of grow in spurts at this stage. I did have a 10 pound baby and labor wasn't any harder. Plus, as long as you don't have gestational diabetes, genetics play more of a role than exercise. I didn't gain that much with my son and he was still huge. I was 9 lbs 10 oz at 3 weeks early.

  • Well, in horse breeding, a fit broodmare often has less trouble giving birth, even to large foals. Not sure how exercise would affect baby otherwise. Sounds like doc wants your body ready for this big girl. Good luck!

  • Def keep exercising, but also remember that u/s weight estimates are not very accurate I was told I was going to have an almost 11lb baby. The tech recommended me for a ceasaren, but my ob is a staff of midwives who knew better. He was still big however 9.7. First baby 6 hours of labor, 30 min of pushing. I did tear internally, and at one point they wanted to cut me, but I refused to let them lol.

  • eh Asher was in the 95% the entire time until 33 weeks, then he just sorta dropped down...it was like "OMG he stopped growing"  They were all like "You're going to have a 4.5 lber"  So I went from being scared shitless of a 10 pound baby to being nervous about having a tiny full term baby.  Know what I got?  A baby that weighed 6' 10".  I really wouldn't stress about it yet.

  • Yep. DS was 90+ throughout my whole pregnancy, even very early on; his head was always 95+ and was off the charts by 38.5w. He was born at exactly 40 weeks, 9 lb 7 oz, 22 inches long. His big pumpkin head wouldn't drop into my pelvis so he never engaged. I never dilated or went into labor, even after a weeklong induction process that involved Prostin, Cytotec, and pitocin. A c-section was my only choice, which turned out great. My recovery was a breeze.

This baby is measuring average so far. I'm exercising this time (I didn't at all with DS...shame on me), but she's also a girl, and girls tend to be slightly smaller than boys.

  • my son was off the charts my whole pregnancy and even after he was born at 11.11 and stayed off the charts till about 18 months when he finally landed back on them, but he is still a big kid. We're in 4t jammies, and shirts but 2t pants for length and fit at 23 months

  • We also make bigger babies. DD was always "2 weeks ahead" but I had no issues delivering her. This baby is also measuring bigger, but I also take that with a grain of salt because scans are just estimates and a lot can change week to week

  • I've been worried for the opposite of your problem. My little girl is measuring to the day exactly where she is supposed to but the docs estimate on weight was in the 34th percentile. That being said me and DH come from tall stock and his family is super tall and super skinny. Hoping its just the genetics!
  • I was told my baby is average on the bigger side so maybe that means high in percent also. Which this also surprises me my daughter was small they had to give me an extra ultrasound because of her size and she was born 6.15 so I couldn't imagine having a huge baby but we will see
  • Thanks ladies for your input. It makes me feel better hearing your experiences. I am going to try to relax about it.

My son was in the 95% was 9.2 and 22&3/4 inches and yes, he's still in the 95th % at 21 months old. I had to have many sizing ultrasounds bc if his size and high risk dr shoulder dystocia. Don't worry, your kid will be what it will be. I was happy not to have a 10 lb baby as my husband was 10.2 and his dad 12 lbs!

Oh and although he was big, I didn't gain too much and I did not have GD.
