Q for Bedsharers re safety

For those of you who choose to bedshare, at what age did you stop worrying about the safety aspects (e.g. light/no blankets, mattress flush against wall, baby positioned on exterior side of mom, hair pulled back, etc). I don't regularly bedshare but will be doing some traveling with LO soon and anticipate ending up bedsharing. My LO has just turned 1 so I suspect I'm probably past the point of needing to worry about these things, right? She is not walking but it cruising, moves around a ton (both when awake and asleep!), etc.  FWIW, we room-shared until 7 months and LO now sleeps in crib in her room. Still nurses 1 - 2 times/night - I just go to her.

Re: Q for Bedsharers re safety

  • DD is almost 1, and we bedshare.  Our mattress is on the floor, we limit pillows/keep them away from her face (but DH and I each have one), and we don't allow the sheets/blankets to come above her feet.  She sleeps on either side of me depending on which side she is nursing on (because she still nurses at night).  Other than that, we are much more relaxed than we were even a few months ago.  I would think falling off the bed (if in a hotel room where you can't move mattresses) may be your biggest challenge?

  • My LO is almost 1, and I feel like I've relaxed a lot too. I would be most worried about falling off the bed. My mattress is on the floor  LO and I had to share a twin mattress on the floor last month on vacation because it was the only one we had room for on the floor. It was super cozy, though!

  • I may get flamed here. Honestly, I loosened up a lot when he could roll over by himself. My thinking was that if he can move himself, he will move his head if he can't breathe. In hindsight, I guess I could/should have been a bit more cautious.
  • I worried much less when DS began to crawl, had perfect head control, and when I could see that he would reposition himself to get more comfortable and for ease of breathing.

Watch LO sleep - does he/she scoot around, roll over, push away effectively?

I would say not before 6 months, but more likely around 8 or 9 months we changed our safety precautions.

  • Thanks ladies - very helpful! LO moves around a ton in her sleep, and while she isn't walking yet, is definitely a regular, active 1 year old. I agree, falling off the bed will probably be the main concern. I'll have to assess that as we go and take precautions for that - have her sleep between DH and me, maybe put some pillows on the floor, etc.

    Thanks for the input!

  • For falling off.... if there is a way to push a bed against a wall, you can box her in. Barring that, pillows on the edge of the bed, or towels rolled up and under the sheet can create a bit of a barrier. I would also make sure the nightstand isn't something she could crawl into in her sleep (you can just cover the edge with a pillow).

    GL!
