Insurance for Baby

As far as I know, I have 30 days to get LO either on one of our plans through work or her own plan.  Since she was born on the 6th, I'm approaching that time (wow, a month already!)  Adding her to my plan at work would be an additional $400/month so I'm looking into her own plan.

Are there any insurance gurus out there?  What would you recommend?

How is everyone insuring their LO?

Re: Insurance for Baby

  • I added LO to my insurance I have through work (BCBS federal employee program). There was no extra cost because I already had a "family" plan (even though it was just me and DH).

  • I'm actually on hold with mine right now. I have a feeling I will be on hold forever. Mine won't be any extra charge because I have a family plan with DD1 already.

  • Yes, mine is close to $500/mo and hers would be like $397 additional.  Wow is right.

My husband is looking into his at work since we're on different plans.

@cashingn2 Can I ask what deductible you selected?

I guess that's where I'm stuck.  I'm looking on ehealthinsurance.com but dont know what kind of plan, ie deductible, co pays, etc., a LO needs...

  • Going from individual or indiv +1 to family is ALWAYS crazy ridiculous. Darn kids :)

  • I was already on my husbands plan, so adding the baby is no additional cost. It might be worth it to add your husband to your plan or you to his, along with the baby, and drop the other plan.

  • We pay less than $200 a month for hubby, myself and baby with excellent coverage. But my husband is an employee of the state so we get amazing health benefits.

  • My SO is employed through the state so adding LO won't change anything, neither will it when we get married later this year.
  • He's being added to our already existing family policy...I have no idea if that is making it go up. I bet DH didn't even ask, but we don't really have any other option, since I'm a SAHM.
  • I can empathize.  To add baby to my plan will be around $400/mo ($1250 deductible, then 100% coverage after that), and to add to DH's insurance will be around $500/mo (can't remember his plan details right now).  It's definitely pricey to get really good coverage!
