3rd Trimester

Washing all babies clothes

Hello everyone, this is the first time I have ever had a question that I didn't already find the answer on here.  There is a good chance that its on here and I just couldn't find it.  So here is my question.  I am currently 34 weeks pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl. I wanted to know, do we have to wash all of the babies clothes to include like there coats, hats, mittens and things of that nature.  I know that we have to wash all of the store bought clothes but not sure of these things. Any information would be helpful.  thanks

Re: Washing all babies clothes

  • I think I washed only the clothes and blankets (not mittens, etc.) for DS1.  For DS2, I didn't wash anything, and I won't for DS3.  Good luck 2nd and 3rd babies. :)

  • I washed everything with baby #1 up until recently actually and he's almost 2 1/2 :)

Plus the smell of babies in clothing washed with Dreft is the best smell :)

If you're too cheap for a baby specific laundry detergent, like I am, I'd just make sure the clothes are rinsed twice. :)

  • I washed everything including mittens, bibs, etc. with Tide free and clear.

  • We wash everything, and use All free and clear (instead of Dreft).
  • Its good to wash everything to get whatever weird manufacturing chemicals out of there. But I will say just skip Dreft. You don't even need scent-free. My mom was insistent we get 'free and clear' detergent because we have some sensitive skin in my family... But no, we use just plan old Tide and we've had no problems. You do not need special laundry detergent... I advise not switching unless you see a problem.
We did this.  I was everything that is washer safe, including those hats, mitts and coats.  I use our regular wash routine since I know that baby's clothes will inevitably wind up accidentally being washed in with our clothes.
Obviously if the baby started getting rashy I would consider trying something different, but I'd rather keep things as simple as possible to start.

  • I washed everything today in Tide Free and Clear. Everything was washed and put away, including snow suits, and face cloths. I am going to do one more load of laundry a little later on down the line. I forgot to wash car seat cover, baby carrier, and a blanket my brother had given to me.
  • I'm also working on washing all his clothes in the free and clear detergent, my husband is really sensitive to scents and colors in detergent so I want to make sure my son's sweet baby skin isn't irritated! I just want to clean all the store stuff and dust off them :-)

  • i washed everything for my first in Ivory Snow (must be the same idea as tide free and clear). I thought i was going overboard until one of her shirts got into my husbands laundry and was washed with normal detergent and she ended up with a large rash. =(. Whoops.
  • My husband and I just washed everything (blankets, bibs, mittens, ect.) over the weekend. It made me feel much better to know that we would be putting her on freshly washed clothes. ;)
  • WASH EVERYTHING YOU CAN!!!!!!!! I worked in retail A LOT and saw how stuff came into the store! Even Toys R Us (which is merged with BRU here), unpacking everything and putting it out disgusted me.... I'm not sure if they wash or spray stuff on the clothing, but it helps prevent wrinkles and keep the clothes looking "fresh" for purchase, it's just chemicals you don't want touching baby's skin. Also 99% of the time while unpacking the clothes to put out, you find dead bugs and what not from shipping. I can't even imagine what is on the clothes that I don't know about. Wash everything you can and stuffed animals and stuff you can't, wipe them down very good with soap and water or some sort of antibacterial stuff!

  • We will be washing all of the baby clothes and blankets! It'll be great bonding time with my mother since she's the one that wants to help me out lol it doesn't help that a lot of the baby clothes were second hand, even if the woman said she washed them all, you just can't help it.

We use All for baby. It's much cheaper than Dreft and smells better to me.

  • So I was having this convo with MIL since we just purchased a new washer and dryer for the house. I made the comment that I am excited about washing all of K's new clothes, to which my mother said that all  the clothes she was getting (from a friend, mostly new-ish second hand) had already been washed.

Then she side eye'd me because I told her that I would still be washing them here, at the house, by my own hands just for safety and security!

I'm sorry, I understand that someone else may have washed them and what not, but I still prefer to wash them myself, and in the same detergent as all his other stuff. My son, my choice.

This is what DH and I used for our LO stuff. It was cheaper than dreft.
  • I am glad I saw this post, I hadn't even heard of Dreft (I live in the US now, but am from the UK) but I got some today and have started to wash EVERYTHING! The house smells so nice!

For those of you using or considering using Dreft, I'm just going to leave this here as a FYI.

ETA: well, the damn link won't work correctly, but you can click on what's there and enter Dreft in the search.

  • Anything that can be washed in the washing machine should be and everything that can't go through the washer (stuffed animals, etc) should be wiped down with some soap and water.  You want to get the factory ickies off.

This. I've even read where they recommend you wash your own clothes in special detergent so as not to irritate baby's sensitive skin from regular detergent.

  • I always use a natural/sensitive not tested on animals powder anyway, as I am prone to thrush if I use anything scented. So I just washed in the same. I will not be washing the baby's clothes separately when she arrives, ain't no one got time for that!
  • Just another echo of pp... I wash everything, including the car seat liner, coats, mittens, clothes, blankets.  My kids, H and I all have sensitive skin. My son is also allergic to Tide, which gives him hives. So I wash everything in ALL Free and Clear.
  • I wash everything that needs to be washed. I used to work at Ross & I know what happens to clothes before they go out on the floor. If its stuffed animals I hand wash those & line dry it. I don't use Dreft though, I use All Free & Clear. :)
  • I will wash everything for baby in the same natural detergent I use for the rest of us. I use ecos.

  • I used ALL free and clear for our house and baby things. I used heaven duty detergent for DHs ( heavy auto tech) work things. I always do a rinse cycle after his cloths for fear of staining my cloths with all those nasty oils and fluids.

  • I put all new clothes through the washing machine, whether for me or the baby. I also wash scarves, mittens, hats, coats, washable toys, etc. Anything that can't go in the washer gets wiped down.

  • Wash everything! I used dreft with my first daughter but since then they have so many free and clear options that I use normally so we're just using that and I don't use fabric softeners for baby stuff. I also wash all my stuff that baby will be on, like my clothes and my sheets. I never thought about doing that until my niece had a reaction on her face after laying on someone who's clothes were washed with regular detergent. We couldn't figure out where the reaction was coming from because all her stuff was washed in dreft. Finally it dawned on us that her skin was touching other things too.
  • I am 35 weeks and we washed our soon to be baby girls clothes, sheets, wash clothes, etc..... Today. We used tide clear & free too. Draft was too expensive.
  • If it's your first, I would suggest washing some. That way if your baby comes out larger or smaller, you can exchange those with tags still on them. I was given a lot of clothes and most of them were new or in good condition. I washed those. I was also given Dreft as a gift, but the ALL works just fine as well as Tide Free and Clear.
