Anyone doing Dave Ramsey?

We've been doing it for about a year and a half, I can't believe how much it's changed our life!!

  • We got into it last yr but it has somewhat tapered off but we did try to go by some of his principles. He has great ideas!

  • I love Dave Ramsey! My husband and I started together as soon as we got married in April. We are excited that my student loans will be paid off come February/March, way before baby in August. :)
  • We started in January and have paid off over $90,000 in student loan debt this year!! We also use a budget app called YNAB (You Need A Budget) it creates "envelopes" for you but we still use our card. The cash envelopes is just too much to handle for me. We went through the class with our church and will be debt free in July!!! Woot woot!
Wow! That's awesome!!! And very encouraging. I feel like we have student loan debt pouring out of our ears. :/

  • I'm here from the June board, but my husband and I are currently working through the debt snowball.... I still feel like we will never be done (thank you funding for a college education!!!) but I know that sticking to the plan will get us there a lot faster!!
  • No, I prefer to avoid racist/classist/heterocentric/Christocentric messages that take White privilege, heterosexual privilege, and middle class privilege for granted.

That is exactly how we felt with our student loan debt. We did not have any credit cars debt. Only student loans and my car. It truly is a great program but you have to do it with the "gazelle intensity" as he talks because it can be discouraging month after month unless you see the snowball decreasing!

  • We don't have debt to payoff except a car payment. What is Ramsey's recommendation for savings goals? I need to pick this book up.

  • We are planning on starting this month. Its a little nerve racking and intimidating but I know its what needs to be done. I have nearly 200k in student loan that only creates stress and worry with me! I need to get that down as quickly as possible. It is good to see others who have been successful with this system!!!

It depends on what your saving for retirement? New car? Totally pick up the book

  • Yes! It has truly changed how we view our money. Telling it where to go rather than wondering where it all went. We are finishing up our emergency fund (baby Step 3) and then on to Baby Step 4 and 5!!

It is a great way to learn what to do with your money and nothing else. He does have his own point of view of things but the bottom line is that you don't have to live in debt and you don't need to make amazing money to be able to do that.

Good luck with your journey of living debt free!

  • My husband and I just finished the classes at our church a couple weeks ago. Good stuff! It is interesting how we look at money differently now.
  • We're starting next week. I'm excited but nervous - the cash envelope thing seems like it's going to be super hard, but I know we spend way too much out of the convenience of just swiping a debit card.

  • I've been doing it for years.  It's kinda second nature.

It's interesting seeing how as your life changes, you actually need to go backwards a little.  We'd skipped Step 5 because we have no kids and were working on Step 6.  Now we're actually back to Step 3 (but we intend to continue with Step 4 and not reduce our retirement savings, kinda a Dave no-no but it's what I think'll work better for us) because our monthly expenses are going up significantly.  Once we finish Step 3 we'll talk to our financial planner about setting up the college fund.

I mentally thank the guy who told me about Dave Ramsey pretty much daily.  While I disagree with a lot of his philosophical ideas, the Baby Steps are smart and I think learning to think about them when I was still in college kept my husband and I from making a lot of very common financial mistakes.
