Couldn't figure out gender at 16 weeks

Has this happened to anyone else? And if so what was your outcome?

I'm a planner. Hubby and I both are. So we want to know what the baby is. It's our first and we mostly went in because I wanted to see the baby on my birthday. We went in for a friend to do an ultrasound on me (she's an OB/GYN resident). She used a crappy small machine, but she couldn't tell what we are having. We thought we saw boy parts, but we just couldn't tell. When an actual technician came in the baby had its legs pretty much together and a foot, hand and cord were all in that area. The tech said she's leaning towards girl. But my friend and 2 other residents were leaning towards boy. But no one saw definite boy or girl parts.

I'm curious if this happened to anyone else. And if it did what did you end up having (besides a stubborn child, haha)?

Re: Couldn't figure out gender at 16 weeks

  • We'll be having our anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks. 16 weeks is still pretty early. There's a good chance you'll still be able to find out.

  • We go in for the "for real" scan on Jan. 24. I can't shake the feeling it'll be a boy. I've thought it the whole pregnancy. I'll still be thrilled for a girl. I'll just be laughing at my "instincts" for predicting kiddo's gender. I've even had dreams of it being a boy. LOL.
  • Can you try again in a week or two when you are further along?  A week or two shouldn't make a big difference in the grand scheme of things..

  • We had two u/s before each of our amnio appointments (at 15w and at 16w - give or take 3 or 4 days), and the baby was rather modest and had its legs tucked up both times.  We found out for sure via our amnio results, but our anatomy scan is a week from today, so I'd hope we'd find out then if we didn't already know.

  • 16 week is early anyway. I'm sure you still stand a good chance of finding out at your anatomy scan.

  • It's early to tell. You'll find out at the 20 week scan. I think most people here are still waiting to find out.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • My SIL had an ultrasound at 16 weeks 5 days and they told her it is a girl. 16 weeks is awfully early to be finding out IMO so hopefully you will find out more at your next ultrasound.

  • Ditto all the PPs who have said 16 weeks is still early and since you have an a/s scheduled, you'll probably get a more definitive answer then.

My a/s is not for another 7 weeks when I will be 22 weeks along. It sucks to wait, but I also think they'll have a better chance of determining the sex correctly by waiting a bit longer (assuming baby cooperates).

  • I have a friend who was voluntarily told at an early ultrasound that the technician thought it was a girl; she was crushed to find out at 20 weeks that it was a boy (after thinking and planning for a daughter). I say unless the technician or dr is 100% sure- Don't guess! It screws with people's emotions!!!!

  • I go in on the 8th I'm really hoping they will be able to tell!
  • I'm curious if my mamma instincts that it is a boy are true as well.  At the NT scan at 12w1d the baby was in fetal position facing away, so I hope that is not its favorite position so we can see a money shot when we go for the anatomy scan at 19 weeks.

If you have another scan in a few weeks, chances are you will have a more certain prediction.  A friend swears by drinking a mountain dew before her ultrasounds.  I am pretty much caffeine-free, so not considering it, but it worked nicely for her.

  • Baby A was breach on my cervix sitting on it's feet with it's cord between its legs at my last U/S, there was just no way to tell. You still have plenty of time to plan, baby will probably be in a different position at your A/S.

  • I've not had a a/a before 18 weeks. I think 16 weeks is still a little early and baby could have been just a little too stubborn for the tech to confident in saying one way or another.
