Anyone Else Sign Up For Bradley Method?

I just signed us up for our classes (starting February 3rd), and was wondering, since we're all getting close to that 28 week mark, if anyone else has signed up for their 12 week course. I was swayed by the 90% "success" rate that Bradley boasts, and the idea of being armed with as many tools as possible for a low intervention birth. I'm a little anxious that DH will struggle with the "rehearsing" of labor strategies in the classes, since he's a pretty reserved guy by nature, but overall am really looking forward to our classes.

What brought you to the Bradley method? Any big excitements or concerns about the course? When do your classes start?

  • Mine starts on the 9th! It's going to be a condensed 6 week class because the woman teaching is due in march.
    We are excited!

  • I'm considering it but honestly don't know enough information about it in order to make a decision just yet. What do you mean "rehearsing of labor strategies"? We're both reserved people and don't like to look silly in front of other people. lol I also didn't realize it was a 12-week course, so it would be cutting it pretty close since I'm already 24 weeks!

@SLSchuerg - I'm honestly not entirely sure, but I know Bradley is all about husband coaching, so I'm guessing that we'll spend some time with the husbands practicing coaching? At my last group midwife appointment, a guest Bradley teacher took us through an exercise where the partner massaged the partner's shoulders while she read a relaxation story. I'm thinking maybe things like this? DH had some trouble with this, but I'm hoping it gets easier. Classes are supposed to be small (3-6 couples) which should make it more comfortable.

  • I cant take the classes because none of the classes near me start in time for me to finish before my due date (i waited too long to look into it all) My sister successfully used the bradley method for her second baby without taking the classes. So i am reading the books she read and i am going to try it.
  • I did! Our classes start next Tuesday, I'm not entirely sure what to expect either, but I definitely am excited!
  • We are halfway done (modified private class due to scheduling trouble).  Really loving it so far!  DH got way more into it after reading the husband coached childbirth book.

  • I'm trying! Surprisingly there's only one teacher in our area, and she's full. Waiting to hear if she's going to open up another class, or else I may be out of luck. :(

If nothing else, get the books. DH has been really into reading them!

Good luck finding a class! We definitely had a bit of a tough time, which was surprising given that we live in a very populated area. Hope it works out for you!

  • We did Bradley with DS and it was great. I don't recall having to really do anything silly in front of the class or anything, for anyone worried about that. There were some times when we did things like practicing counter pressure or exercises to show how pain in really worse when you are tense (I tensed up while DH pinched me to cause pain and then the same with me relaxing). And one of the last classes the instructor set up her house so a different room was for trying different techniques but we were all spread out around the house then so that still wasn't in front of people. We did have some homework related to massages - 3 for me and 1 for him - with the aim of him making sure to know what kind of massaging felt good to me to have that info in labor. I'm sure we wouldn't have practiced anything without the structure of the class, so that was good. I'm a little worried about whether we will be able to review adequately to be ready for this birth without having that structure.

  • Originally, we were going to do Bradley, but opted to hire a doula and have private 6 week classes with her. If we decided not to have a doula, then I would definitely do Bradley.
  • Our classes start on the 14th. I did Bradley with DS, and opted to do a full course again this time because SO hasn't done it before. Plus, my mom said she didn't take a refresher course with my brother after me and regretted it.
