Food/Formula intake

Our LO is going to be 7mo on Saturday and lately he's been all over the place with food and formula intake. He used to (up until the past week) had 30oz formula and about 3-4oz of food per day. The past few days he's been only taking a few bites on solid foods during meals and not interested in eating much until dinner time and his formula is about 4oz a bottle. Last night, DH put him to bed and he basically had to struggle to get LO to eat 2oz. LO will drink fine 1-2oz and then after that he puts bottle in and out of his mouth. Then if I hold him to drink his bottle he suckles and then after a few swallows he moves nipple to side, chews on it or moves head to the side. If I sit him up and put him down he cries and gets upset if I take the bottle away. I thought maybe and ear ache, but he's not fussing with his ears. Any thoughts?

does he need a faster flow nipple?

Our pedi doesn't believe in flow nipples. She says regardless they control the flows. I guess I could give it a whirl regardless. Can't hurt.

  • Maybe his gums are bothering him. I had to feed C a bottle the other day and he was doing the same thing. I gave him a little Tylenol and he seemed to have some relief. They said he has been chewing on his nipples at school and they think it is because he is working on some teeth.
He's got one that's come through the skin and we can see about half a tooth, so maybe the one next to it is coming through. I haven't really noticed, but will check it out after nap. Thanks.

  • I moved little one up in nipple flow size, and it helped tremendously with feedings.

Sure they control the stop and start but picture it this way:

If you place your mouth over a sport's top water bottle you get a certain amount, if you do the same thing with a bottle of wine you get a lot more.  You can control when you stop drinking the wine but if the whole top is in your mouth you cannot really control how fast it comes out.

That said, Lilly is doing word-for-word the exact thing with her bottles.  I don't have any advice.  We just struggled through her bottle last night.
That's a great analogy! I agree. I plan to try this ASAP! Last night we chucked it up to teething but since it's been all day, too, it's got to be something. Vinny slept last night 11hrs so I guess the 2oz. didn't really affect his sleep. I didn't have such a struggle when his last tooth came through, but I guess at this point it could be anything. I'm going to attempt the Level 2 nipple!

  • Thanks for the advice.  He didn't eat much for dinner, but gulped down his after nap bottle with the level 2 nipple.  Bedtime bottle was easier than last night but still moving his head from side to side but whined if I took the bottle away.

  • Lol @ your pedi not "believing" in nipple flows...they exist, they are real
