Nursemaid's elbow

This was a horrible morning. I took "mommy fail" to a whole new level. Em has learned from my nephew to hit when she gets angry. Today she wanted to play with the cap from the nose drops, and when I took it, she threw a fit and hit me. As I usually do, I firmly grasped her arm at the wrist to stop the hitting and told her no. She got angrier and threw herself backwards, so I instinctively tightened my grip so she wouldn't fall off the couch.

I felt a pop, and Em started crying. At first I thought she was still angry and that's why she was crying, and that her wrist joint had popped (like when someone cracks their knuckles). Then I notice she was holding that arm, wouldn't move it, and when it did move she would cry.

I freaked. I called my husband and he came rushing home. I left him to watch Nicholas and I took Em to the pedi. The doctor said that the two bones in her arm got stuck on a ligament and were essentially in the reverse position from where they should be. She had to manually pop it back. It was awful.

The good thing is that Em instantly felt better. I could see in her face when the pain went away and she was crying more from fear. She was able to use the arm again immediately and even smiled at the doctor before she left.

I just feel so horrible. I hurt my baby. It was an accident, but it came from my attempt to discipline her...it seems even worse because I was doing it that way thinking it was a gentle correction. I can't explain how awful I feel. And in the back of my mind I'm wondering how to stop her hitting in the future, since it will be a cold day in hell before I hold her arm again.

I'm going to go eat all the Christmas candy and cry now.

  • How scary! I am glad she is ok now. Don't blame yourself so much - accidents happen all the time. She will not remember it.

  • Oh mama. I'm so sorry that happened. You are a wonderful mom. You are. You are, you are, you are.

I'm glad Em feels better. Hope you do soon, too. It's over. You're a wonderful mom who had a really, really shitty day. Enjoy your candy. Tomorrow will be better.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm feeling a little better now. Em is sitting with me, happily eating a snack and watching blue's clues. Seeing her happy is soothing my anxiety and guilt. I really hope this never happens again!

  • I am sorry that happened. It was a mistake and you did not mean for it to happen. Kids do crazy things and throw their weight around. You are a great mom and we all have our moments. I let LO take ahead dive off of our guest bedroom when she was 7 months old. I felt horrible and was so upset but my pedi told me stuff like that happens with kids.
