Insurance

I've recently found out that anything pregnancy related is not covered by my insurance. I'm 17 and under my dads plan. I'm trying to get covered by mainecare but they go by household income( my parents make too much). I'm so stressed out that I won't be covered and will be forced to pay out of pocket which will be thousands. Has anyone gone through this/ any suggestions ? Thanks

Re: Insurance

  • His insurance has to cover maternity care under the affordable care act. I would have him ask why they aren't compliant with those mandates.

Depending on where you live you may be able to find a hospital or clinic that will take you on a sliding fee scale. You could contact united way in your area and see what options are out there.

Many insurance plans are not required to cover a pregnancy in a dependent that is not the partner or spouse. And even if they did cover her pregnancy, very likely the baby would not be eligible for coverage.

OP, I recommend asking your OB if there is a social work department at the area hospital that they can put you in touch with to help navigate this.

  • I was 17 when I had my oldest. My pregnancy also wasn't covered under my moms plan. I was incredibly lucky in that my mom still took care of my insurance for me, so she paid out of pocket premiums for an individual plan that would cover me. Those are expensive though, I would definitely look into the healthcare.gov website.
  • You should be eligible for healthcare with the new reform, the toll free number is: 1-800-318-2596, you can call them and ask any questions you have. They will be able to help you.

I didn't even think about the dependent peice. Yikes!
  • What state are you in? Pa has healthy beginnings for situations like this - https://www.dpw.state.pa.us/foradults/healthcaremedicalassistance/healthybeginnings/index.htm
  • Mainecare...are you in Maine or is that a typo? If you are in Maine I would go to your local DHHS office and talk to them about your options. I'm in Maine and I know here in Bangor we have Penobscot Community Health Center and they offer care with a sliding scale for cost. All is not lost, definitely check into your options.
