C section question!

Hi all- I am scheduled for next week to deliver! The ultrasound tech has me a little worried and wanted to get your experience regarding babies coming out first and second. Right now both are head down and a is lower left- b is sort of on too of a. The tech said that sometimes they will pull the baby on top out first and call it a. We have names picked out for each and I am worried the OB will mix them up!!! Any words of wisdom?

Re: C section question!

  • I have no real words of wisdom because I was under the impression A was always pulled out first. C was our baby A and he was pulled out first. I know that for sure because my MFM did a 3D ultrasound at 30ish weeks and it matches A and B to a T. How very exciting to be so close. Good luck!

  • I do know that whoever comes out first will be "baby a" regardless of how they were labeled on the inside. There were differences between my two: A was smaller and breech, so we knew who he was. We didn't assign names ahead of time, so it's wasn't a big deal for us.

But my inside baby a did become my outside baby a.

  • We also named our babies beforehand, but didn't have this problem as Baby A was much bigger than B (still is). If there isn't a notable size difference between the two, I would just talk to your doctor about your concerns and let them know that you want them to be kept straight.

I can't believe it's almost time for you to have your babies! So exciting; good luck!!

  • Just mention it to your dr ahead of time. My in utero baby b became outside baby a, but we knew that was likely. I asked that they make sure to indicate right side baby and left side baby. I didn't have names assigned, but I was curious to be able to compare their in utero personalities.
This won't be a big deal at all!
    You are getting so close!!

  • During pregnancy A is usually whomever is closer to the cervix as that would be the first born during a vaginal delivery. Then at delivery the one who comes out first becomes A, so during a c-section they can definitely switch who is A vs B. Just ask for specifics at delivery (was the first born at the top, on the right, etc).

  • We also had assigned names prior to delivery. My A was always head down and measured slightly larger. B was never in the same spot, but always further up.
B ended up flipping during labor and that's how I ended up with the c/section because I didn't want to attempt breach delivery or possible double whammy.

I did communicate prior to the c/s to the attending dr and rest of OR team which baby was which to make sure that was the order they were going to deliver, as well and they assured me because of how the girls were, that A had to be A in my case.

(Their birth weights were right on track with the last u/s guestimates.)

Good luck on your big day!

  • Just before the delivery, I made sure to tell everyone, that regardless of their order out, the baby on the right was Claire, the one on the left was Talia.  It happened that Baby A, as assigned by U/S was Baby A when delivered too, which happened to be Talia.  I also knew from growth scans that Talia was consistently a little bigger than her sister by a few ounces, and that coincided with their initial weights.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!
