Ergo Infant Insert Question

Hello! Lurking from July 2014. I have a question for Ergo-using Moms here. Did you use the infant insert in the summer after your baby was born? I'm curious if LO will be too warm in the infant insert in July and August.

I've never used the infant insert before, I purchased my Ergo when DS2 was big enough to not need it. I'm trying to figure out if I should buy the insert or purchase some sort of light wrap. Thanks!

Re: Ergo Infant Insert Question

  • I used it...inside, but we weren't really outside too often during those first few months :)

  • It was so hot! We never used it with this kid. I did roll up a blanket and put it under her butt for a good while. My baby was also enormous so she wouldn't have fit in the insert for long.

We had a moby that we used too, but it was also really hot. There weren't many good options, haha!

  • Also, I'm in VA and I did do some early morning walks with him in the insert and he did just fine. He was a little sweaty when I got him out, but he seemed ok :)
  • Thanks! I think it will probably be too warm based on your comments. I don't think my nearly 4 and 2 year old boys will let me stay inside all summer when this baby comes :) I'll need to keep searching to find a cooler option. I'm in Upstate NY, it is usually 80s with high humidity here in the summer.
  • I know a lot of people liked the k'tan breeze I think it was called.

because it didn't fucking snow enough for me to build my own
  • Thanks @jackson290721 I'll look into that.
  • I did once or twice and it was way too hot here in MA. I ended up using a sturdy gauze like wrap I got off etsy. It's very similar to a Moby but it doesn't stretch and the cloth is very breathable. It was perfect. No one got any more sweaty than normal. I still use it sometimes inside.

  • I used my Mei Tai and ring sling a lot and the Moby inside.

Here's a super early pic of her in it and one from a few days ago.

When did Iris get that big?? :( I remember that first pic!
  • I have a Beco, which is similar. We didn't use an infant insert - you can actually just put the baby in there with their legs bundled underneath them without it.

I'm in Canada, and baby wearing was very hot, although Amanda didn't seem to mind that much.....

  • Four days- four+ months. Same gauze wrap. It's hard to tell from the photos but the material is very sturdy but you can see through it a bit. Highly recommend it if you don't mind wrapping.

  • I did use it. Mostly inside, but also outside on occasion. My kid was 5lb9oz when we brought him home from the hospital, though, so I felt like we needed it to support him.

I would not have enjoyed being a mother the first few months without the ergo and even now, there is nothing better than wearing my baby. I will do it as long as he lets me.

    So cute :)
  • I used the Moby with her until she was big enough for the ergo without the insert. I think she's 4 days old in this pic.

  • I hated the insert.

  • I had a hand me down insert and it just seemed to difficult to get a tiny baby into it when out, and it looked really hot. I used a Boba wrap for the first 2 months and then switched to the Ergo, with a rolled up receiving blanket under his butt at first.

@ramy3695 it seems that way! I honestly feel like it was just the other day that we were all talking about circumcisions and umbilical cord stumps!
  • I tried it once and it was way too hot, plus she just generally seemed uncomfortable.....I used it with her legs froggy style until just this past week.....

  • I bought the insert and never used it. I used my moby all summer and that worked great. :)
  • Way too hot here. I had a Boba wrap I used some, but that was pretty warm too.

  • The main reason I chose the Beco Gemini was because it didn't have an insert (I knew it would be way too hot in the summer). I cannot say enough good things about it. Hands down the best, most-used baby purchase.

  • We bought the Ergo but LO was pretty much too big for the infant insert by a month old (I think its a 12lb limit??) so we never bought the insert.  We didn't start using it until she was 4 months old (so October).  But let me tell you that thing is HOT - I sweat just wearing her in the winter I can't imagine wearing her in the summer!  Other than that we love it and use it a lot!
  • I didn't get the insert, we used a ring sling until he was bigger.  Wraps and slings are so much easier and comfier when they are tiny anyway.
