Question for CDing mommas and laundry!

I have been using CDs with our DD (baby #2) now that we live in a house with our own washer/dryer.  So it's been almost a year as she was born in Feb.

Anyway..

I had a friend convince me to wash the dipes in vinegar and baking soda.  She said that's all she ever used and has no problems.  I don't have problems with leaks or anything, so I'm pretty sure there isn't any build up on the dipes.  But, every time DD wears one it smells strongly of ammonia after she wets.  I mean like knock you down, take a whiff of a bottle of ammonia type odor.  And as the dipes build up in the pail, obviously the smell there is VERY strong.  I have to hold my breath when I throw one in the pail or empty them into the washer.  If I breathe thru my mouth, it stings.  It ridiculous.  I told my friend what I was experiencing, and she said she's had no problems.  I follow her laundering advice to a "T" and still have these issues.

So, I'm ready to be done with all that.  I'm embarrassed to use cloth and stuff in public or at church where others would be able to smell it when I change DD.  I need advice from other CDing mommas on how u launder ur dipes and what u use!!

TIA :)

Re: Question for CDing mommas and laundry!

  • We used to have this problem. I changed the detergent I was using to tide original powder and the problem went away almost immediately. Rockin green makes an ammonia bouncer too. I've never tried it, but that could help.

  • I didn't realize regular detergents like Tide were ok to use!  I thought it had to be something specific for CDs.  That helps!
  • What does your laundry regimen look like for washing ur dipes in tide?  How much do u use and what kind of cycles and water temp?
  • I do a cold rinse with no detergent, a hot wash with cold rinse and an extra cold rinse.
  • I also use Tide. Only use the powder though. No liquid. I use it to the 1 line. Do a cold rinse no detergent, a hot was on heavy load, then another rinse cycle. Once a month I do a bleach wash of my prefolds and inserts.

  • I do a cold rinse with no detergent, hot wash with detergent and an extra hot rinse.  I usually fill the scoop that comes in the box to the 1.  If the dipes still seem soapy, I'll run them through an extra rinse, but I usually don't have to. I have almost all BG 4.0's, so occasionally I'll squirt them with the BG anti-odor stuff, just for good measure.
This is me exactly. Same kind of diapers too.
  • It sounds like an ammonia build up like others said. You can use *some* regular detergents, but be careful because most of the scented or ones with dyes cause build up on the diapers and they won't wick moisture away. Cotton babies (BumGenius diapers) won't approve my detergent, Purex, but it works fine. I usually stick to the free and clear to be safe, but have used the lavender and mountain spring scents without problems.

    Good luck!
