Ok, this is embarrassing to admit as I am just barely even 28 years old, but I have a ton of gray hair. I started noticing them shortly after K was born and that kid has caused a new one to pop up every single day. I asked my mom and sisters to tell me if the grey starts getting noticeable, and 3 of the 4 have pointed out the gray over the holidays. UGH.
So the time has come for me to start coloring my hair I got highlight for about a year around the time of my wedding, but that is all I have ever done to my hair color-wise. I want to get an all over color (because it is much cheaper than highlights) and I want it to me minimal maintenance. I want to go a touch lighter than my natural color, but I don't know if that's even possible. Is the only way to go lighter getting highlights or can they do an all over color in a lighter brown? I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff, but I believe I have heard hair has to be bleached before it an be lightened and not just dyed lighter...
For reference here is me today (hair not straightened is a rare occurrence for obvious frizz reasons, and yes I took this pic just for y'all. Haha):
And this is what I want (not the style, but the color):
Is it possible without bleaching first? Thanks!
Re: Hair help
Anytime you go lighter they have to use a lifting agent to pull the pigment out (like bleach) it will be more damaging to your hair. You would probably be better off having them color it as closely to your natural color as they can. Coloring also gives your hair a better shine. Then you could add in a few highlights if you wanted to lighten it up a bit.
ETA: I spoke to soon! Checked with my mom who is a stylist you can lift with color just need correct developer strength. Sorry for my mixup. Good luck!
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions! MH likes to call me "Ole silver head" these days in a bad attempt to be funny and I am sick of it!! Needless to say, I will not be letting it go gray without dying it. I just lack the gusto to pull that off! Haha.
The grey is mostly underneath, not at my part, which is why I was able to hide it for so long, but now I am noticing grey hairs closer to my face and on the top layers of my hair.
Thanks Bella! However, when I used to highlight my hair I found that it just kept getting lighter and lighter every time I got them re-done until I was pretty much blonde and my roots were super noticeable. I was hoping an allover color would make my roots less noticeable and be a little less expensive than highlights. My stylist always said he could add lowlights to make it a bit darker, but again, it was just too expensive to keep up
I'm hoping once I find an all over color I like, I can match it at the store and try my hand at doing it myself.
