Play Yard Sheets

We are planning to use our pack n play as the bassinet once we bring baby home. I put a waterproof mattress pad and fitted crib sheet on it last night and now I'm questioning if I should actually purchase play yard-specific sheets. The mattress pad is a basic quilted one from BBB and it seems pretty thick and "cushy." I tucked in the extra material from both as tight as I could but it still seems loose and I'm concerned it isn't safe.

Anyone else out there experience this? Does a play yard sheet make all the difference? What about the mattress pad?

Thanks!

Re: Play Yard Sheets

  • U don't want baby on something "cushy". The mattress needs to be firm. I am using my pack and play as well and bought the specific sheets. Target had them on sale last week for 7$. That may be a little more safe since its designed for the pack and play

  • I bought the PNP specific sheets as well with DS and did not use a mattress pad. When baby gets older like old enough to lift head and roll themselves over I used crib sheets as spares if I needed them. I think the only time that happened though was when he got a stomach bug and kept urping up and having diarrhea. If you get two PNP fitted sheets you should be good to go.
  • I don't know about your play yard - but my graco pack n play "mattress" is already waterproof so I don't see a need for a waterproof mattress pad on top of it. I did get the sheets that are made for it and they fit nice and tight. You don't want the sheet to be loose fitting, so I would buy the sheets made for it.

  • @Roses87, do you have a mattress pad or any kind of waterproof liner under the sheet?
  • We used our pack and play as a bassinet for DD#1. I only used the play yard specific sheet. It fit snug around the mattress.

  • Silly question, but aren't all PNP mattresses waterproof?

I would definitely recommend going with specific fitted PNP sheets. Like others have mentioned, you do not want anything lose around LO...especially where they are sleeping.

I wondered this too, but when I felt mine it didn't seem like it was.  It was just like a fabric covered board.  That being said, I am a newb and don't know what I am doing. :)  I ditched the mattress pad and I am just going with the PNP sheets.  I guess I will find out if it's waterproof the hard way ;)
The family I was a nanny for used those little changing pad circular covers under baby and either over or under the sheets to help add an extra layer, but not add any extra dangerous bulk because its so small - maybe try that? I got  a pack of 6 on Amazon for about $12 shipped. I was looking around online and didn't see anything that said that was a dangerous combination, so sorry if that is bad advice!

  • Ok, this is what I was thinking but just not sure. Thanks, ladies!

The "mattress" in our Grace PNP seems waterproof but I'm trying to think ahead for a mess in the middle of the night when it'd be easy to just rip off a waterproof pad rather than have to pull out that "mattress" and clean it.

  • Like PP's have said, I was concerned about the regular crib sheets being too loose, so we bought a specific PNP sheet. It is definitely smaller than the crib sheet so you can avoid having anything loose. You can get them for pretty cheap at BRU or Target.
