I'm curious to know how common this position is. So far, I don't know anyone who has delivered in this position, I just don't understand delivering a baby laying on your back (and the newest one I heard) laying sideways!
I will be delivering at Magee next month, and according to our doula, most doctors there are open to you pushing/delivering in whatever position you feel comfortable with. When we went on the hospital tour a couple weeks ago, they seemed pretty positive about using different positions as well. I would make sure to include it in your birth plan/vision, if you have one.
I delivered with the Midwives at Magee three times. They are open to different positions, and the hospital has squat bars that attach to the top of the bed. I tried squatting with my first, but was really tired at that point. We ended up tying a sheet around the squat bar and I pulled on it to get leverage. The second two came out with very little pushing, so I ended up on my back. So yes, it is an option, but I don't know if it's a commonly used one at Magee.
