Adoption

The Adoption Process for Middle Class

I, nor any members of my close family, have even been through an adoption process. I have been trying to 4 years with no success in getting pregnant and I am at the end of my rope; I don't know if I can continue this emotional journey of being told time and time again I am not ovulating. I and my husband have agreed to look into the adoption process. I am 25 years old and my husband is 30 years old. His credit is good, mine is still getting worked on so I didn't know if the adoption process requires both having good credit in order to get a loan for the adoption process. I know it can take quite some time for the adoption process but can anyone point me in the right direction of where to start? We don't know where to turn and we want somewhere that will be able to answer all of our questions. I really appreciate any information for those of you that have or going through the adoption process. Thank you!

Re: The Adoption Process for Middle Class

  • Hi and welcome. There's a set of FAQs at the top of the board that will likely get you started.

You can adopt even as a middle-class couple. There are grants as well as loans, and a lot of people do fundraising in various ways (selling things on Etsy, getting a second/weekend job, fundraising events, yard sales, etc). On the back end, there's an adoption tax credit, and some employers provide adoption reimbursement.

When you look to adopt, they will look at your finances, but it's pretty basic. They just need to see that you would be able to support a child. You can always ask ahead of time what they look at, and if it will be a problem to adopt.

GL and I hope to see you posting often.

  • Congratulations, felecica_filly, on your decision to consider adoption!

It seems that you've already received some good advice and places to start.  Here is an online article that discusses all of the different options around adoption.  You may also want to check out icareaboutorphans.org.
