Parenting after a Loss

XP Baby girl is here

Thanks to Wifey xo for updating everyone. DH is in the shower and baby girl is sleeping. I'll post a real birth story later. After a long induction and forceps delivery we welcomed baby Mackenzie Jean at 12:17pm. She was 8lbs 5oz and 22in long. I have a 3rd degree tear that I am having a hard time recovering from. DH and I decided to stay the extra day in the hospital. We will be heading home tomorrow. It is currently snowing in metro Detroit, and we are expecting about 6 inches today/tonight. Baby girl will see her first snow storm. I'll post a real birth story once we get home.

eta: Any advice on the tear would be helpful.

Re: XP Baby girl is here

  • Congrats and welcome! I remember you from way back. I am so sorry about the tear. Ouch! I had a second degree one, and the scripts the Dr. gave me did the trick. I kept to the same 4 hour schedule that they had me on at the hospital until I ran out. Good luck and congrats again on your rainbow!

  • Congrats!  No advice on the tear, sorry.  If it's like recovering from a c/s, my advice would be to just take it slow.

  • Welcome and congrats!  I'm in the Detroit area as well.

As far as the tear, avoid stairs as much as possible.  When I came home with DS2, I brought everything downstairs and only went back upstairs when it was time for me to go to bed.  Get a script for Ibuprofen.  Use the peri bottle for awhile.  It was feel so good.  Also, witch hazel pads are very helpful.  Just take it easy as much as possible.

    Congrats again!

  • Congrats! I love the name. The tear sounds ouchy, hope it heals quickly. I don't have any experience but take the Motrin they give you and use the little rinse bottles I think those are key.

  • Congratulations on the birth of your little girl!  I can't offer any advice on the tear (I had an emergency c-section) but I did bring my little guy home in the middle of a big storm- well, at the tail end of it.  If you ever tend to lose power, check to make sue that you have it before you leave the hospital.  We live close to the coast and our town has a tendency to lose power during some of the strong Nor'easters, and the hospital let us know that if we lost power, we could stay another night.

  • I had a tear too, though not a terrible one. I swore by benzocaine spray. Omg--instant relief. You can get it OTC. Witch hazel is great but be careful as it can dry out the skin around the injury. Just keep an eye on it. Warm showers also provide a lot of relief. Hang in there. The first three days are the worst. Within a week you feel much better!

  • Congrats & Welcome! The only thing I'll add is avoid Always with dryweave. Those pads will rub you raw. I ended up getting Stayfree since they are soft.

As for the tear, I had a 3/4 th degree tear that took almost 3 months to heal. I found relief with sitz baths, benzocaine spray and witch hazel pads. I also used miralax for a few weeks , because, let's face it,BM's really hurt! Just be sure to take it easy and enjoy your bundle of joy!

  • Congrats! I've only experienced an epi and a 2nd degree tear (along said episotomy scar), I was all about the mesh pany/ice pack lined with which hazel pads, applied to the damage site. I also used the lidocaine spray (ETA, I looked it up, it was benzocaine) very liberally. And the peri bottle, I threw it all at the problem. Bon courage momma!
Ditto all the bolded! Congrats and welcome, mama!
