For those taking metformin

This may be a silly silly question, but for those of you who are on metformin, do you still consume alcohol? I'm talking about a glass or two of wine or beer here or there, not getting smashed.
My RE didn't say anything about it, but I noticed on the bottle that it says not to take with alcohol. Does that me no alcohol at all while on it, or just don't take the pill with alcohol?
Since I started taking it in November I haven't had any, and we are going out for New Years tonight and I would like to have a nice time and relax with a glass or two. I just want to make sure I'm not going to be really regretting it and end up in the bathroom all night.

  • My doctor said not to have more than 3 drinks in a week.
  • Is your doctor in today? You may want to call to see what he/she would recommend for you specifically.

No, of course not. I tried calling and they are closed for the holiday.
Thanks for comment. I think I'll play it safe and only have a few sips of champagne to ring in the new year and call the RE for specifics on Thursday.

Sounds like a good idea. I hope you enjoy your night :)
  • My dr said that 1-2 drinks once or twice a week was fine. Alcohol affects blood sugar levels, so you can't go crazy.

  • Drinking alcohol with metformin can lead to a serious condition called lactic acidosis. A few drinks a week is ok, but my doc said that if you plan on drinking in excess, to skip that day's dosage.

  • Mine never said anything about alcohol. I have a drink sometimes after work and I don't see any difference in anything. I dont ever consume a large amount tho. My bottle didnt warn not to drink while taking it either tho. I didn't think anything of it.
