Posterior Tongue Tie

Anyone else's LO have a posterior tongue tie? Are you doing any treatment for it?

My LC diagnosed itbut pedi said she wasn't even sure she had one, just noticed she doesn't like to keep her tongue down. She said there was nothing an ENT could clip. We are having shallow latch issues. She also loses suction midway through a lot of feedings. She seems to be doing fine getting fed tho as she only nurses for. 5-10 min on one side every 2.5-3 hrs.

The LC have a recommendation of a family dr who specializes in tongue tie but the reviews there are that she ALWAYS diagnoses tongue tie and does the snip.

So much conflicting info - don't know what to do!

ETA: I know there was recently a tongue tie thread but I'm specifically interested in experiences with posterior tongue tie since it seems harder to diagnose/ less straightforward on treatment best practices.

I don't have experience with this but I would take LO to an ENT ang get their opinion. They specialize in this and will give you the best diagnosis and advice.

Wow. I could have written this post! - even down to the 5-10 min nursing sessions. We were just told last night LO has a posterior tongue tie. There's no "string" that's obvious to me to clip. The LC also said a lot of pedis seem to think they're no big deal. She gave us the names of a couple of pediatric dentists and ENTs to call. We're having such difficulty bf'ing on the one side that I'm definitely going to talk to a specialist.

    How old is your LO?

DD had one diagnosed as well. We just worked with an occupational therapist who gave us exercises to help the shallow latch. She went on to nurse for 18 months. Just working on strengthening the muscles seemed to help.

She's just over 2 weeks old. Even the pediatric dentists/ENTs here apparently don't "believe" in posterior tongue tie and/or it's ability to inhibit feeding.

The only rec the LC had is a family practice dr who gets pretty bad reviews online for being sorta quacky and off. Not exactly who I'd like to take my baby to. I'm so conflicted on what to do!

Keep me updated on how LO is doing and how things go with the specialist!

Hmm that sounds interesting too. The only other rec the LC gave was for cranio sacral therapy and I'm just not too sure about that. Maybe I need to do some more research to see if there are OTs who deal with this here. It just sucks how little support and help there is for this. The pedi blew it off, my OB said she doesn't even know any LCs and very little turns up in a web search.

Where do you live? I scheduled LO's surgery for next week. Apparently the doctor is well-known and has patients from all over come to see him. I'm in upstate NY (which is where he is). If it makes sense I can give you a referral. :)

Also, my LC gave me some very helpful websites for info re: posterior tongue ties. I can share them if you're interested.

Would definitely be interested in the websites!

I USED to live in upstate NY, but now we're pretty much across the country. I did call my son's ENT (from ear tubes) to see if they would at least see her since they are the top rated pediatric ENTs around here and they will see here, but not until January 14th. I'm on a list in case there are any cancellations, but that seems so far away. I'm just not comfortable taking her to this other provided that gets the bad reviews, seems a little hokey, has questionable billing practices and apparently pretty much clips something regardless of a need based on what I've been able to tell. I'm still not convinced she needs anything done, but there's so little information out there, I'm just not sure.

If you wouldn't mind sharing the websites perhaps I can get myself more educated with reliable resources since it seems like much of the info on PTT is on blogs from Google searches.

Thanks in advance!!! Saw in the other post you scheduled LO's surgery - hope it works wonders for you!!!

Thanks @mrshoffman2b!!! I wish we were closer to Albany like we used to be!!!

I've decided I want the ENT to look at her. We couldn't get in until 1/14 but are on a list for cancellations so we'll see.

1/14 sucks, but in the long run, it's not that far off. Hopefully it'll be worth it!
