can babies nurse and nap at the same time?

The last few days my baby has not really napped much and has increased the amount of time he nurses at each session.  He used to nurse for about 10-20 minutes.  Now he nurses for  45 minutes to an hour.  Often his eyes are closed and his mouth sucks alittle then stops then repeats but he is not sucking hard.  I am wondering if he is sleeping during the nursing sessions.
ETA: He is 3 months old.

  • In a word: yes. :) The sucking you are describing is comfort nursing, and IMO is the sweetest thing. Grab a good book and settle in, mama!

  • I notice a difference between "sucks". DS sucks for food (he sucks hard and consistantly and I hear swallowing). And he sucks for comfort, which is little sucks, stops sucking for 10 seconds starts up again, I don't really hear any swallowing.

I think he is probably getting some milk when he comfort sucks, but not much.

This is usually our pattern when I nurse him to sleep. We get him all ready for bed and then he starts sucking for food/because he is hungry. I usually feed both sides, but sometimes he will only take one, so sometimes I switch sides. Then his eyes close and he begins comfort sucking. Sometimes he will stop all together and come off the breast, but most of the time he will just keep comfort sucking. I usually let him do it for about 10 minutes (I can usually tell when he has really fallen asleep). I stick my pinky in the side of his mouth to break the suction and then DH puts him to bed (asleep).

It sounds like your DS is napping at the breast.

  • My LO does this too. I notice a change and it almost feels like an off and on fluttering compared to sucking to eat. That's how I know she's sleeping and unlatch her like PP said.

  • At that age (and still now) DD would fall asleep and go between comfort nursing and eating. The comfort nursing usually brings on a let down and she will drink it while still sleeping.

Sometimes I still have OALD but that is usually just the first let down when she is still awake.
