HELP Anyone else w a noisie baby

So Carson (1 month old) has slight reflux. He is on gas drops because he gets gas pains and won't burp 50% of the time (he is only bf). Our nights are kind of rough. When he sleeps he maks all sorts of loud noises. He groans, he makes noise like he has flem in his throat, and he coughs all the time. He also kicks and flails his arms all the time. It is almost impossible to sleep through. My husband has a pillow covering his own head half the time. I have tried elevating his bassinet so he is not laying flat. I have tried putting him in his car seat. I have tried putting him in his swing. I have tried swatting him with his arms in and out. I even just ordered a rock and play sleeper hoping that it will help (waiting for it to get here). The only thing that seems to help is having him on his belly and I am terrified to let him sleep that way (eventhough my mom said that is how she put my brothers and I to sleep everyday). I have talked to his pediatrician and showed him a video of him sleeping. He wasn't really concerned because he is gaining wait, growing fine, and not screaming in pain. is there anyone else out there with this problem? Any ideas what I should do? Do you think I should push for reflex meds or just let it go? Am I missing other symptoms of reflex that I should know? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: HELP Anyone else w a noisie baby

  • Sorry it was supposed to say swaddle him not swatting. Stupid auto correct!
  • Loading the player...
  • do you use a humidifier?
  • If he's doing fine, I would just deal. My LO is a very noisy sleeper. DH uses ear plugs when it's not his "shift." Glad you meant swaddling, not swatting. Also... Weight, not wait.

    Also....."noisy" not "noisie"

    Lol...sorry, OP.

My son is pretty loud when he sleeps. He snorts and makes a ton of noise. My first one was pretty loud too, although he ended up being diagnosed with sleep apnea around 1 1/2 years old. Other than that there were no issues, including reflux.

ETA: I'll second using a humidifier or air purifier. They have really helped DS1.

  • My LO grunted for 3 hours this morning.  She didn't cry, just grunted and stretched constantly.  It was so cute/annoying because I just wanted to sleep while she was and she was so loud, I couldn't.

I think noises like that are pretty normal for a while.  I remember DD1 grunting.

My DD never cries but rather grunts, groans and growls. She'll sometimes do this for hours in the morning while she's in between drifting in and out of sleep. I'm beyond thankful she doesn't cry but wish she wasn't so noisy. She even grunts while she's nursing.

  • This all seems pretty normal. My LO was the same way at 1 month old. Give it another month or so, it gets better.

  • My LO is a pretty noisy sleeper too. She's constantly stretching and making noises with that. She also dreams very loudly. She has congestion and clearing her throat too, for this we started using the humidifier and it's helped a lot. I also make sure I clean her nose out so she can breathe really good. That helps everything.
  • We bought the leachco podster for LO to sleep in. He will only stay in either that or his bassinet. It's a pillow that is slightly sunken in the center so it keeps him slightly upright which helps with reflux. It may or may not help you though; sorry you're struggling :(

  • My LO is a noisy little thing too. Last night was particularly noisy. So many grunts, growling and other sounds that make me wonder if she's a gremlin.

ETA: so I had to google gremlin gifs. I think this one perfectly depicts her when she sees my boobs come out when she's hungry…

Omg YES! We've been calling our little guy a gremlin too!

  • So glad to read this thread!! My LO grunts and flails around alllll night long! Doesn't cry unless she is hungry and ready to eat. I was so worried she was in pain or something was wrong... But like others have said, she'll do it for hours but never actually wake up! Glad to know it's normal!! Wish it was easier to sleep through though!!
  • Grunty babies over here too. My old BMB called them dinosaur sounds. I think it's perfectly normal.

  • My baby is formula fed and pretty gassy and noisy all the time.  He often has a hard time getting to sleep, etc.  I know this won't help you because your baby is formula fed, but I burp Ozzy after every ounce.  Rather than patting his back to burp him, I rub it.  It seems to work the burp up better than patting.  At least for him.  Also, and I know this is a big no no, I put him to sleep on his boppy.  It keeps him inclined enough that the reflux isn't as bothersome.

    Sorry.  Good luck.

  • Jack has always been a grunter. Our peditrician explained that newborns are constantly growing and learning how to connect the brain to the action they're trying to do. The stretching is, often times, just them working out some "growing pains", as the grunting can be them trying to figure out how to fart or poop. I remember how hard it was to sleep through some of those sounds the first month. We use a RNP because Jack also has some reflux and used to be extra gassy; it works well for us.

He is 8 weeks old now and all of his grunts and groans have seemed to lessen. Don't get me wrong, he still does it all, but it's not so extreme. It does get better, and you will get more familiar with what sounds are normal for your baby.

  • Thanks so much for the answers. I thought Carson was in pain at night. I am glad to know this is normal.
  • I have a hard time sleeping through the noises too. Kid farts like a grown man since the day he was born lol!'we swaddle because if we don't, he wakes himself up fist pumping. Instead just his legs flail around. When he is sleeping un swaddles it is fun to watch him. :) I have hit exhaustion point where I can sleep through it lol!

  • @kbart82 so long as LO isn't crying or screaming, I'd imagine it's all normal stuff. I have been telling H all the time that no one really prepared me for the crazy sounds babies make... Or that they breathe weird sometimes. Or that they will projectile poop across a room.
