Outside babies/STMs

Question for all those with outside babies or STMs, this is two fold but how big were your babies and did they really wear newborn clothes at the hospital and when they got home? I don't have a ton of NB clothes and just wanted to see if getting more was practical.

Re: Outside babies/STMs

  • Newborn clothes for my baby girl.  She was under 7 pounds when weighed 24 hours after birth and lost some weight last week too.  0-3 months is too big on her for now.

  • Mine were 7lbs 6ozs and 7lbs 5ozs and they were not in newborn clothes long, babies tend to grow really fast. I have tons of nb clothes because my mother in law keeps buying more and at this rate this LO will never wear everything she has.
  • My son was 8 pounds when he was born (this one is due tomorrow and not making an early appearance) and fit in newborn clothes for a while.

  • Mine were just under 7 and 8 exactly. I didn't have too many newborn clothing - maybe 4-5 sleepers and some t-shirts? They were in them for a month or so. But more importantly the 0-3 were not so big that they weren't wearable. Yes, they were a little loose but no big deal. So I don't think you need too many.

  • DD was 8.6 lbs and wore newborn clothes for the first two maybe three weeks. I had to run out and buy a couple more newborn outfits because I only had one or two. I did not think she would grow out of them so fast, but by her one month check up she was 12.3 lbs...

I ended bringing a NB and 0-3 month sized outfit to the hospital to be safe.

  • DS (that's the first time I said that!) was 5 pounds 4 ounces and 18 inches and is just now back at that weight. We stupidly bought premie clothes and NONE of them fit. He is wearing all the newborn clothes we already had. That reminds me I need to see if I can return these premie clothes even though they were washed...

  • #1 was 7.8 and wore some newborn clothes.

#2 was 9.3 and wore 0-3 mo clothes.

We're team green and since we already have 1 of each the only new outfit I bought was a little brother and little sister sleeper to go home in...I bought 0-3 mo size bc even if it's a little big it will get more wear than a newborn size.

FWIW I think I only bought 3 newborn sleepers for DS when he was first born.

  • DD was 7 lb 3 oz and in NB clothes for about 4 weeks.

This baby was 7 lb 8 oz and is in NB at 2 weeks, and I would think he has at least another couple of weeks in them.

  • DD was 6lbs 11 oz and wore newborn clothes for awhile.
  • DS1 was 10 pounds, never fit newborn.
DS2 was 9 lb 6 oz, I don't think we bothered with newborn for him either. His torso was longer, so the 0-3 mo pants were a little on the long side, but that just meant his feet were always covered.
DD was 7 lb 5 oz, she wore lots of newborn. We personally didn't buy much, she was the 1st girl for both sides of the family so got LOTS and LOTS of clothes!

  • Ds was 6 lbs even and DD was 6 lbs 6 oz. both wore newborn and even some premie. My must have for clothing them as newborns though is the Gerber long sleeve onsies with mitten cuffs (you fold the flap over so they can't scratch themselves) and pants or just swaddled on top of that. Gerber runs small though so those were a size 0-3 right from the beginning .

  • DS was 5 lbs 13 oz and wore newborn for the first 2 to 2 1/2 months. My niece that was born in August was 8 lbs 1 oz or 8 even (can't remember) and she started in 0-3 and just skipped the nb clothes.
  • DS was 8lb4oz at birth.  He never wore newborn diapers and I had to squeeze him into his newborn going home outfit.  This time I am just bringing 0-3 month.

  • My first was 6 lbs 12 oz at birth and she wore newborn clothes for a month-2 months. DD2 was 5 lbs 12 oz at birth and is now 5 lbs 6 oz and is barely fitting in the newborn stuff(it's huge on her) so I have a feeling she'll be wearing them awhile.

  • DS was 7 lbs 12 oz at birth. At the hospital he just wore diapers and the hats and t-shirts that the hospital provided. At home he wore newborn-sized clothes for the first 3-4 weeks I think.

  • DS1 was a week late and 8 pounds exactly.  He wore newborn clothes out of the hospital and for about a month after (I think, it's kind of hazy).
  • Dd1 and 2 were both 6lb babies, they came home in preemie clothes and took 6-8 weeks to grow into/out of nb clothes

  • DS1 was 8lb 5oz and was in newborn size for 3-4 weeks. We just have a few onesies, sleepers, and gowns. He got a lot more use out of 0-3 month clothing.
  • DS wore NB for maybe a week or 2 then it was into 3 months for him.

  • DS was a preemie and weighed 5lbs 5oz at birth. He was in the NICU for 3 weeks before he came home. In the NICU they didn't put clothes on him, just a diaper. He came home in a newborn outfit and I had a few nb sleepers and onesies for him. I would not invest in a lot of nb sized clothes. Just a few things mainly Jammies. They will fit in them for a minute.
  • DD1 wore newborn clothes for about 3 months. She was 6lbs 8oz when she was born.

It depends on more than the birth weight of your baby. Namely how they gain/lose weight at first, and if you personally prefer to have them in snug or roomy clothes. My DD and niece both weighed 8lb at birth. Mine wore NB for a week, and my niece for over a month. If you already have some, I would wait before investing in more.

  • DS (holy crap is that weird compared with typing DD) is wearing mostly 0-3 clothes or 3 month Carter's. He was 9 lbs 9 ozs at birth and was 9 pounds even at discharge. But it must be distributed weirdly because everyone is commenting on how small he looks, despite being bigger than DD at birth, and born 11 days earlier than her.

  • DS was 8lbs 5oz when he was born and wore NB for about 2 weeks, then was too big for them.

  • DD was born 5lb3oz, but she lost a bit of weight and is around 4lb14oz. Newborn clothes are a little big on her, but preemie clothes are waaaay too small. So, we are going to get a few more NB clothes because she will have time to grow into them.

  • Mine were 7lb15 and 7lb13 wore newborn for a month. I' d buy atleast a 3 nb sleepers,6 onesies keep the tags on in case you need to return them and only bring 1 newborn and a 0-3 outfit to the hospital.
It's nice to have plenty just in case so you don't have to do as much laundry or have to send your husband to buy nb outfits for you.
  • Ds was 5lbs11oz and his newborn stuff was too big! My mom went and bought us a few preemie outfits for him. He's 2 weeks tomorrow and the preemie's are a bit snug and he's not completely swimming in the newborns anymore. Of course I had figured I would have a huge baby and intended on returning all of the newborn clothes, but it looks like we'll be wearing those for at least a little while longer!

  • We were in NB clothes for a couple weeks (2 probably).  She was born 7lbs 13.5 oz.  I would say if you have some, you're fine.  I wouldn't buy more in advance unless your ok with returning them.  She spent the first couple days in sleepers mostly so i wouldn't get anything 'fancy' in NB either.
