TI vs. IUI -- WW3TD

Hey Ladies!!

I am currently 5dpo on a 1-month break after 3 failed IUI cycles.  As I come to the end of my break, I am now starting to think about what I would like to do moving forward.

You can check out my full background in my siggy, but I'll give you the 'skinny' on my test results here so that you can reflect on all of the details.

DH -- SA comes back 'good' in RE's terms (post wash - 40mil, 55%motility -- didn't get a # on morph?)

ME -- HSG clean, TSH slightly elevated, Progesterone good, irregular cycles (O'ing late between CD21 - 28 on my own)

I am definitely going to go back on medicine, because my cycle isn't 'regular' without it.  But what I don't know about is whether I should try TI for a few cycles, or if I should jump right back into IUI?

IUI's ARE covered by my insurance, so it isn't a money issue, but I am wondering how much my success rate increases by doing IUI's vs. TI??  If it isn't much of a difference, I think DH would much prefer TI, however he is leaving it up to me because he knows that I want to do what is going to give us the best chance.

Thoughts!?!?!

I know you ladies aren't medical professionals, and I WILL end up discussing this with my RE when I see him next, but I trust your judgement/thoughts and would love to hear your take on my decision as well!

Thanks in advance!!

Re: TI vs. IUI -- WW3TD

  • You could always try a TI cycle or 2. But my understanding is that unless your issue is that you aren't ovulating, or you have weak ovulation (which it doesn't sound like you have a problem with if your progesterone and LP are ok), then TI doesn't increase your chances by much. But you never know, getting an extra follie or 2 might do the trick, so no harm trying. Just not for too long :)

  • @rox825 - I believe I was having a weak ovulation and low progesterone levels before femara. Both of my losses showed my progesterone level at <1 in blood work. But I had 7dpo bw done last cycle on femara and my progesterone was over 20. That's kind of why I think maybe all I need is the meds?

  • I'd go IUI. My RE explained that the odds are much better. It seems like TI might work, but we all want this yesterday.

My Re actually does both in a cycle. They have me trigger, BD that night, next day nothing, following morning IUI. Might be something to talk to them about, that way you can do both. GL :)

  • JMForte33 -- I technically do.  RE has us BD on CD12 night, I got in for u/s and post-coital on CD13, then we abstain that night and go in for IUI CD14.  After my IUI, I am usually in so much discomfort that we can't BD anymore.  This past cycle I had a b2b IUI on CD15 as well (after O)

  • I ended up being cancelled for IUI this cycle and we were told to do TI instead because my odds of having any good eggs were really low. My RE explained that, if I popped out any good eggs, TI has about a 10% chance of success vs a few % higher for IUI. My husband is actually really happy, because he feels like this is isn't a "procedure" this way... haha.. he hasn't been giving himself shots and getting ultrasounds for the last 3 weeks :)

I think they're both viable options, it's just a slightly higher chance of success with IUI!

  • @jszy10 OK got it. If you had weak ovulation before femara then you could definitely try a TI cycle, I started with that since I originally had suspected weak ovulation. Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • Thanks for all of the feedback so far ladies!!

runawaylaurel, I think my husband would react the same.  I think he prefers it to be natural over giving the sample.  Hell, who wouldn't really lol.

NariaDreaming -- sorry, I should have said that I have since been put on synthroid and my number we down from almost 4 to right around 1.  He is very happy with that now, so that is under control.

    ----

My mom and my husband had both made comments to me over my break about "just letting it happen" and being more "natural" about it.  I think that is what really got me thinking about taking a step back from the IUI's for at least a cycle or two.

I actually wanted to TP my husband the other day in the car when he blurted out "maybe you just need to relax and let it happen"....I stared at him with fire in my eyes and said "did you REALLY just say those words to me!?!"  He then corrected himself to something a little less harsh that at least gave me a little insight into how hes really feeling about everything (DH doesn't express much).

  • Iui, my RE said chances are better, bc sometimes even healthy sperm have problems pentetrating eggs. But it's more invasive so idk. .

  • @pcrumley -- "bc sometimes even healthy sperm have problems pentetrating eggs", VERY true.  I have had 2 poor post-coitals and 1 great post-coital.  1st poor was with clomid, then I had a great one, then my last one was bad.  So I guess I should think about that too.  Better safe to know it got there than sorry.

The "more invasive" part is what makes me think TI.  My schedule will be changing at work and I'll lose my ability to have morning appointments before work, and I feel like my sick days are going fast -- I need a day off to recoop from the discomfort/pain I feel after my IUIs, plus I usually end up having to take a 1/2 day for the actual IUI itself.

  • ugh...clearly I can argue both sides equally.  I think it will end up a game time decision from month to month.  Maybe i'll let my post-coital decide, if its good we'll keep TI, if its poor we'll go IUI.

  • Do both! IUI or back to back IUI's plus 1 or 2 TI's each cycle has such a better chance than just IUI or just TI.  :) Best of luck!!
