3rd Trimester

Anyone else have terrible sciatica/sciatic nerve pain?

Did you see your doctor? Did anything help? This is super uncomfortable. I am switching sides every 3 or 4 minutes. I've tried a pillow between my legs, stretches & baby aspirin. TIA

  • Seeing a chiropractor helped me a ton.
  • I started wearing a pregnancy support belt and it has helped a ton. It relieves pressure on my lower back and my sciatic nerve doesn't get inflamed as much I guess.

  • I thought I had this problem and ended up being muscle spasms in my pelvis! I have been going to the physical therapist and getting heat therapy and massages and its painful but been helping. While I am home I put heat on it and stretching constantly. Prenatal yoga has helped with this also. Good luck! I know the pain is terrible.

  • Yep mine has been bad for weeks. My doctor recommended a support belt but I haven't done it. Hoping I don't get to that point

  • Yep, I started having this middle of my 2nd trimester. Lots of warm baths with Epson salts are about the only thing that gives me some relief. Good luck! I totally feel your pain!

  • I went to a physical therapist who gave me exercises to help (they are!) and I wear a support belt--not all the time, but it helps when I'm standing at work, going up the stairs, or commuting. Also have switched my workouts to include swimming and not just biking/ walking on the treadmill.
  • :( it's the worst! I'm plagued by it pregnant or not. Acupuncture is the only thing that has worked for me. It's natural healing. ( but I'm not against the drugs ;) you can do this when you're pg. you'll start feeling better after the first session. Good luck with it. I know how brutally painful it is!

  • I had this really bad for a stretch, and here's what I did: -chiropractor -massage -heating pad -baths Good luck!
  • I've had it since the first trimester. I was given Tylenol 3 for it during the second trimester because I had trouble walking. Now its worse. Especially if I lay flat for even a second. My doctor recommended physical therapy. I didn't do it. I've gotten better dealing with it. However lying on my back to deliver is going to be quite uncomfortable.
  • I hear yah.  I have it really bad with this pregnancy.  WAY worse than the first.  My midwife suggested physical therapy... but I have no interest in taking off more work to go do that.  Plus, I have done physical therapy in the past for this pain and it only relieves it for a few hours.  I have just been taking it slow, trying not to carry my daughter around too much, and watching how I move to try to not aggrevate it.  Heat works.  I have the rice bags that you can microwave.  I just drop it behind my back at work and lean up against it.  I probably look like a bear scratching it's back on a tree, but I don't care.. it works and makes me happy.  The belly support belts don't work for me, they just make it really hard to sit.  Too much pressure on the bump and then I feel like I can't breath and I have to pee.  12 more week... at the most.  Then at least I know as soon as I deliver it will go away.

  • I guess I'm not the only one. It is one of the most uncomfortable feelings & it comes & goes more down my legs more now too instead of staying in my hips area. My doctor recommended Tylenol extra strength at night to sleep better & said to always wear support maternity pants so it takes some of the pressure off of my hips & lower back instead of regular comfy sweats/pj pant etc. thanks for all the tips ladies. I may try a heating pad & warm baths too.

  • I had it pretty bad too. Support belt, stretching, heat and massages helped a little bit.
  • Ugh, mine started getting bad at 35 weeks... Ii'm just taking tylenol and using a heating pad.

Thank god there's only a few weeks left!

  • I've been lucky so far, and it only seems to bother me at night. However, things that seem to be helping: yoga, heat, deep pressure massage (I get DH to dig his thumbs in, and while it hurts in the moment, it seems to really help after), and sleeping sitting up with a pillow half wedged under me.

    Good luck!

  • Oh my gosh, I had this for only 3 days but it was miserable! It hurt constantly. A constant jolt of pain going through my back every other minute. I tried heating pads, baths, massages, rockin on my hands and knees, and none of that worked. So how it went away? One night when I was tossing and turning, my pelvis popped and my back reset somehow. It went away immediately! I recommend a chiropractor if you need assistance.
  • It's been said but it isn't said enough. Chiropractic care in pregnancy is so important. Especially late in pregnancy and with a Chiro that is well versed In pregnant mamas. It's amazing. The pregnant waddle so many mamas get at the end... Not suppose to walk that way!!! I see a Chiro weekly or more often if needed. I have no pain, no waddle and feel great!! Other than the fact I have a 39 week belly, I do not feel pregnant. I can move, bend over, pick up my 2 year old, scrub the floor, do a little dance. Having your pelvis and sacrum in order and moving correctly can decrease labor up to 40%. And it helps keep baby in good position as well! I'm a HUGE advocate for Chiro care. More OB's should be recommending this so pregnant mamas.
