Delivery options

So I initially thought I was going to make a scheduled c-section date for my twins but twin B (girl) turned and they are both now head down.
I am currently 29w4d. Is there still a possibility of one flipping again? (if anyone knows)
I am starting to rethink my delivery now knowing that they are head down.
I still have time and am thinking I could better take care of my little ones without the necessary surgery if I can avoid it.

Just curious to who had a vag vs. c-section birth and the position of your twins.

Baby B was always head down.  Baby A flipped @ 25w and stayed head down.  I had a premature vaginally delivery @ 32w3d when my water broke.  In the beginning of my pg I was  scared of a vaginal birth, but very thankful to be able to have one.

My epidural was perfect.  DS came out, they broke DD's water and did a quick u/s to make sure she stayed head down.  DD was smaller and slid out after a couple of pushes.  They were born 17 min apart.  I did have a tear from DD coming out "sunny side up", but overall my recovery was good and pretty uneventful.  Good luck with whatever you/the babies decide!  :)

ETA: my 1st epi sucked so they had to redo it and then it was great

  • I haven't done it yet, but right now I'm planning a vaginal birth assuming baby A stays head down. Baby B is breech, but my OB will deliver a breech baby b (assuming he's not bigger than A) - you might want to see if your doc is comfortable with that should baby b move. My OB says that as often baby b will flip once there's room, but also since you've already delivered baby A and as long as b isn't larger, they come out pretty easily in a breech position.

I had a pretty rough labor with DD and a big tear, but I'd still choose a vaginal delivery again and that's my plan for now  with the twins even with a breech baby b.

So if B does flip, it might be something to think about/and ask your OB about if she/he will do a breech delivery.

Good luck!! Hope they both stay head down.

  • Thanks ladies.
I appreciate the feed back a lot. My doc has said that if baby B DOES flip after A comes out then we would most likely have to do a CS so that is my fear that I will have to endure both.
I will just pray that they both stay head down and that B doesn't flip once she gets more room after her brother is delivered.
I will definitely talk to my doc about my options for baby B for the what if's but for now I am leaning more towards vaginal. I think it will be the best option for me and the babies at this time.
Now for them to behave in there until they are well enough to join us in the outside world.

  • Hi! Both my girls were head down so I went for vaginal delivery. I was also scared about baby b flipping after a was delivered due to the extra room. My OB had two nurses put pressure on either side of my stomach after a was delivered to prevent b from flopping over. Worked perfectly and girls were born only 3 minutes apart! :)
  • I delivered my first set of twins at 35w. It was a vagunal delivery, 14 min apart. Baby A was head down and baby B was transverse. Baby B was delivered sunny side up. I was in labor 6 hours and had a great delivery.

My OB just wants A head down and will deliver B breech. I'm 31w with my 2nd set of twins and both are head down so hoping for another smooth delivery. It's scary being pregnant with twins but trust your doctors to take care of you and babies.
  • I would try for the vaginal if they are both head down.  My girls were both head down the whole time and stayed that way until delivery.  We attempted a vaginal but I was induced and took a while to progress and ended up with a fever so we did a c section.  The csection recovery was a breeze for me though so it doesn't always mean you will have a hard recovery.  I was driving a few days later and doing my normal activities. For a while I was really bummed I didn't deliver vaginally but now I'm happy with how things turned out.  I shudder to think of vaginal tearing and that recovery lol!

  • I had a wonderful and easy vaginal delivery 3 hours 57 mins. 9 minutes of pushing with no tearing or postpartum swelling so I was good to go immediately after birth. My midwife (my MFM drs wife but he also attended just in case) delivered them 3 minutes apart. Baby B flipped head up I head down 3 times during delivery he was head up but followed A out almost like he grabbed his ankles and ended up coming head first if that makes sense. I made sure to find a MFM who was comfortable on breech extractions and well educated on twin deliveries to avoid a section. Did your dr say why they won't do a breech extraction? If it were me that would be a red flag and I would be going else where. The first twin sorta paves the way for the second so it's easier to get the next out compared to if it was just one baby coming out breech.

  • Is there any chance you could find a new OB who would be comfortable with a breech extraction of twin b?
I wouldn't want to have a vaginal delivery with one who isn't (because risk of a c section but also I would want someone who is comfortable with it in case b is coming fast after a and there isn't time to do anything else).

I personally would want to try for a vaginal delivery but I hated my c section recovery and really wanted to experience a vaginal birth. I know that isn't for everyone through.
  • My twins were breech and transverse so I had a C section. Baby B was transverse nearly the entire pregnancy but I dont think A changed positions after week 32. I had a really rough vag delivery with my DS but it was a piece of cake compared to this recovery. I had a seroma under my incision which required a wound vac for a couple of weeks and it finally closed at 8 weeks. I would be in such a better state of mind had I not had those issues.
  • For me baby A was breech and B was transverse and they stayed that way from week 28 on I believe so I had a scheduled cesarian at 37 weeks.

I of course was worried about having major surgery like that but I was very fortunate to not have any complications and recovery was a breeze. I felt 100% by two weeks post surgery. I requested an abdominal binder for support right after surgery and that was wonderful. I also really made an effort to walk and move around once the catheter came out.

My DH was awesome in helping me recover by handling all the 'heavy' work. I am very happy I never had to experience labor or a vaginal delivery.

  • Thanks again for the input. I have an appt with my doc next week so I will definitely be discussing my opinions on the birth then and to make sure we are on the same page.
I feel better about my decision and am hoping for the best.
    Thanks again ladies :)

  • My twins were a vaginal delivery at 35 weeks.  Both were head down when my water broke.  My son was born and then my daughter flipped with all the extra room in there.  My doc was able to get her out anyway 9 mins later.  Good luck! :)

  • I am no where near delivery but I am terrified of a c section. I have major surgery anxiety. Always have. My doctors do not feel that a c section will be necessary at all even at this point due to my cervical issues. They are more worried about keeping them in. My c section fear is something my DH so does not understand.

  • I was prepared for whichever type of birth was coming my way (my mind set was whatever is meant to be will be) and I ended up with a C-section due to my placenta. For me my cs was a breeze I was up and moving around 12 hours later and walking to the NICU to see my boys, I didn't want a wheelchair but we brought one just in case. If I had the option for vaginal delivery i would've gone for it. Good luck!

  • My OB has mentioned several times I will probably need a c section. I had major abdominal surgery while pregnant with DD and I don't want to recover from anything similar ever lol. So my OB and I are going to have a little chat about my options. I know it's a bit early to tell since there's still so much time for them to move around. I have a feeling I may be stuck with the c though as baby a has been camped our breach directly on top of my cervix for the past two months. Maybe he/she will surprise me and move though :-)
