How do you know it's BH?

I've always wondered how people know they're Braxton hicks contractions and not the real deal. I'm 20 weeks tomorrow and obviously haven't had any yet (at least not that I know of)

How will I know when I do?

  • Braxton hicks are just random contractions. Real contractions become longer and closer together and intensity increases as well. Also real contractions don't go away when you change activity but Braxton Hicks do.

  • BH are just tightening, they maybe 'uncomfortable' but shouldn't hurt. they are random, no pattern nor do the increase in strength, duration or amount.
ditto this.  For me, I can feel my entire uterus harden like a rock and then release a few seconds later.

  • I agree with PP. Also, my BH were no where near as painful as my real contractions! When I was delivering DD those contraction made my butt hurt.

  • Braxton Hicks aren't timeable. Though my doc says if you start having them with any regular frequency you should call.

  • My tummy tightens but I thought it was LO stretching out. Now I'm curious if its Braxton hicks. It doesn't hurt and happens a few times a week starting a few weeks ago.
  • My whole stomach would get hard and I'd kind of feel out of breath. Never really painful and not a stabbing pain. Real contractions are like someone twisting your ute with the force of a thousand men. (for me) :)

  • BH usually stop if you sit down & drink some water. Real ones don't, they just get worse. And what PP said about not being regular & timeable.
  • What everyone has said - I also would feel slightly out of breath. First pregnancy they didn't start for me until 27 weeks... But this time around they started at 20 :( I'm 23 weeks Friday. I have to go in for an appt on Friday bc mine are very frequent - sometimes as often as 4-5 times an hour.
