Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Sippy Cups

DD will soon be 13 Months and has been drinking mainly from straw sippy cups for a few months now. She is down to 1 nighttime bottle. My issue with the sippy cup is what a mess she makes! She sucks too much and much of the liquid comes back out of her mouth, usually wetting her clothes even with a bib on. I've tried several types of straw cups, even tried regular non-straw but she doesn't know to tilt the cup. Usually during the day I need to change her clothes due to the mess. And since she's in FT daycare most days I pick her up and she's wearing her spare clothes. Anyone else had this issue? Any bib suggestions to keep her dry?

Re: Sippy Cups

  • My daughter thought the sippy cup was a toy and made a game of spitting the water out with her first sippy cup (introduced at 6 mo).  I changed cups at 11 mo and got one without handles and she stopped the slobbering and spitting game with the drink.  Not sure if this is helpful for you or not.  I also would make a point to hold it for her for the first week and wouldn't let her get too much in her mouth so she would swallow it instead of spit it.

  • Thanks for your advice. I thought this was just a phase but the drinking/spitting has been going on a few months now. It seriously drives me insane especially when her clothes keep getting soaked. The straw cups I use do not have handles. If I try to pull it away from her to allow her to swallow she gets mad and may even throw the cup. UGGHH maybe I'll just revert her back to bottles :-)
  • We got the tommee tippee sippy cups that are more like a real cup, they have a spout. I wouldn't revert back to bottles, but maybe a few days of holding a non straw sippy like a bottle for her so she learns that it needs to be tipped back? Try to find one with a slow flow so she doesn't get scared at too much too soon when she does tip of back.

  • My DD does the same thing, though not as much as she used to (she is 14mo now). We double bib her. A bib made from a towel goes underneath to catch excess liquid and a Bumkins super bib goes on top to capture crumbs. It works well enough that she doesn't need a new outfit every time.
