Tummy Time Mat?

Do I need one? Or is any blanket fine at first? We're moving over the summer, so I'd like to hold off on buying stuff that I don't need at first, until we get settled in a new house (prob 4-5 months old at that point). If I will want one later, then what kind do I want? Or what features?

Re: Tummy Time Mat?

  • We didn't have one- I just used a blanket. I propped up books around her to give her things to look at and used rattles and toys to get her to turn her head and push up.

  • You have time, just a blanket is fine at first. A friend of mine gave us a play mat, otherwise I wouldn't be bothering to get one until baby is older.

  • Blanket is fine, I bought a playmat for baby #2, and added a play nest to the collection for this baby.

  • I received two as gifts with DD.  We sold our house when DD was 8 months so I totally get not wanting a whole ton of stuff right away.  I think that if you're moving when LO is 4-5 months old, that you'll be fine with just a blanket.

  • The play mats are fun but you have a few months before it makes any difference.

  • Large water proof flannel pad will work just as well, by easier to wash, easier to fold, have multiple uses, and be much cheaper.
  • A blanket is just fine at first (and really, you don't NEED an activity mat), but DD did really enjoy our play mat (Fisher Price - the jungle themed one) once she got old enough to reach out and swat at the toys on it.

We used a blanket and a boppy for tummy time. When she started reaching for toys and making eye contact, we used an activity mat while she was on her back. She really liked the mirror and the toys that flashed lights and played music.

  • It's nice to have, but blankets work fine too. I wouldn't worry too much about gettin one, but if you saw a great deal it might be worth it

  • We used his crib quilt for that. His play gym came with a little pillow for tummy time and so we'd sometimes use that too

  • I registered for a special "tummy time" blanket/pad, and never used it. Blankets are fine, with toys and books and all that. It was a bit of a wasted item for me, but thats just us!
