4th degree tears

Anyone else in this club? I had my beautiful baby boy yesterday (almost 10lbs) but in the process I tore from my vagina into my rectum. 40+ stitches were needed. I'm experiencing lots of pain and tightness today and worried about a future of possible incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. Did anyone else sustain a 4th degree tar? If you did my sympathies - how are you coping?

  • Wow! And I thought my 2nd degree tear was bad! I know it's going to take some time to heal but I hope you start feeling a bit more comfortable soon!

  • I did :( The delivering OB did an episiotomy and I think I tore more from there. AND he had me most of the way stitched, noticed that he missed a spot, and had to take it all out and start over. I didn't ask how many stitches, and I don't want to know. I lost a lot of blood and ended up with a blood transfusion the next day. LO was 9lb 4oz and has a big head. I'm worried about incontinence too...I had a catheter in for 2 days, and now I can barely tell when I have a full bladder. I've been feeling better the last few days (LO arrived 12/23); I've pooped and it seems like it gets a little easier each day. But I definitely share your fears about future complications. My post partum appt is in 3 weeks, and I'm going to have a lot of questions for my OB (it was one of her partners who delivered).

  • I delivered an almost 9lb baby boy yesterday afternoon and had 3rd degree tearing. I'm miserable without taking the Norco and Motrin - learned my lesson today about trying to do too much. That ish HURTS -- my lady bits feel like they're shredded to hell. Hugs to y'all with the 4th degrees. Hoping this all gets better soon!!
  • Sending hugs and healing thoughts to you ladies. Hope it gets better soon with no lasting effects.

  • One of my nurses told me she'd had a 4th degree year with her first. She had a second, so clearly it wasn't enough to deter her from possibly going through it again! That being said, I am so so sorry that happened :( I read about them when I got a 2nd degree and didn't know what that meant. Really hope you're feeling better quick with no lasting issues!

One of the doctors I saw in the hospital (not the one who delivered LO) described it as a c-section in a much more inconvenient place. The nurses in the delivery room told me after we were done that they had started prepping for a c-section (I had pushed for a while) and were surprised that the delivering OB opted for the episiotomy/forceps instead. I really wish he would have just done a c-section.

I had an emergency c section but a 4th degree tear just sounds plain awful! Hope you get to feeling better soon op

  • Regarding incontinence, don't hesitate if you feel the slightest need to go-just get to the toilet as quick as you safely can! I had only minor tearing but still had slight problems with this at first. Kegels are supposed to help.

  • I am very sorry for your vaginas. Hope they heal and you feel better soon

  • Ouch! I tore some(he didn't tell me how bad and I didn't think to ask in the moment) and I was sore for a few days and will still get sore almost 2weeks out if I do too much. My vagina is crying for you ladies I hope you have quick recoveries!

I had the same thing, but my ob wouldn't tell me how bad it was because I kept passing out from blood loss and she didn't want to give me another reason to keep passing out. I ended up with about 40 from love button to butt. I'm 3 weeks postpartum most of them have dissolved and I can walk without pain now. It gets a lot better, just keep up on your meds and take it easy.
