Pregnant after IF

Exercise

How many of you work out and how long did you wait after your transfer/beta? I stopped going to the gym after transfer but just started again today and I am just over 7 weeks and wanted to check if that seemed ok. Just doing light biking and walking.

Re: Exercise

  • I think that's fine. My doc didn't want any running for about 9-10 weeks. But, when thy cleared me, I was always too sick or tired or out of breath after working all day. I'm a believer in listening to your body. If you feel too out of breath, crampy, lightheaded,or dehydrated, then stop. I think our bodies give good feedback! Like they say, just keep it easy:)

  • I stopped working out (running) before transfer, but continued walking regularly throughout my cycle.  When I was about 10w I got a pregnancy work out dvd that has different work outs for each trimester.  I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up walking outside in the winter, but wanted to keep doing something.  I've been doing it 3-4 times per week and I love it!

  • The only concern my RE had were my enlarged ovaries. Besides that, I'd take it easier first tri then hit the gym 2nd tri. Good luck and welcome!!!
  • @jschwind22 that workout sounds awesome I will have to get one like that!

Tonight I only did the bike for 20 mins (very very slow) and then walked slowly on the track for 20 mins. Was very tiring but nice to get moving.

  • I teach group exercise classes. I got subs for all of them until we heard/saw the heartbeat. When I started teaching again, I kept it much lower than I normally would. Good luck!

  • First tri was really more about survival for me. Between the enlarged ovaries, the vomiting, the on/off pelvic rest and the tiredness, I didn't worry about working out. Just short walks.

Now I'm feeling a bit better (fiiinally lol) and am extending the walks. Still on pelvic rest so have to take it easy.

My RE was ok with walking or elliptical or swimming only, but not while on pelvic rest. My OB doesn't push for exercise at all with twins (which was surprising) other than walking and yoga.

I'm a very active cycler so this has been hard :( but it's only temporary and so worth it

  • Check with your doctor.  Personally, I just did some light walking/hiking for the first half of the 1st tri.  The second half I pretty much did nothing since I was so ill with morning sickness.  2nd tri I got back to the gym and resumed my old workouts (mostly elliptical and brisk walking on treadmill, also started aquarobics), but a bit less strenuous.
  • @JSchwind22 - what's the workout? That sounds great. :) I'm really only doing walking (with the dog) and some prenatal yoga 1x each week.

  • My pre-pregnancy workout was pretty active- we went to the gym 4x/week for 40 min cardio on the elliptical and then weight training, 1/x week ballet (90min), figure skating 5x/week (60 min), and walking the dogs everyday for 25 min.

Per our Dr, I could resume my normal workout 4 days after the FET.  I waited a week after our FET to go back to the gym, and that was on the elliptical but on a lower level and made sure my heart rate didn't go up to high.  I still skate, but don't train as hard and understand the risks of falling (which I hardly ever fall) and will probably stop skating when I don't feel it's safe or uncomfortable.  I'm also still walking.

Every person is different and should seek the guidance of their doctor, but this is my exercise routine for now and will most likely change as my body changes.

  • I quit during my IVF cycle as I had so many follicles (48 removed) any form of working out was killer. I planned to start working out again in the first trimester but ran into bleeding issues so was in pelvic rest. Plus my all day m/a really didn't put me in the workout mood. I just recently started prenatal yoga. I want to start adding in some pregnancy workouts too but the yoga has been a great start on working out again. I missed the working out feeling and am so glad to be doing something again.
