Mastitis and stomach flu

Seriously, I have mastitis and now the stomach flu.... At least i don't think there related. I just went to pump and I've got hardly any milk. Will my supply come back? This sucks.

Re: Mastitis and stomach flu

  • You're probably just dehydrated from puking. Keep pumping as much as you can and try to stay hydrated. Try gartoraid. At least baby should get the antibodies and hopefully doesn't get sick too. Good luck.

  • I have mastitis too-diagnosed Monday. I feel for you with the flu..how terrible! Supply will go down in the affected breast. Lots of fluids, rest and nursing/pumping often to empty the affected breast will help it clear up. Take care ot yourself!

  • Oh you poor thing! I agree with the others, you're probably just dehydrated. Try to get as much fluid and rest as possible. Start every nursing session on the affected breast so it gets thoroughly emptied. Your supply should come back fine. But mastitis sucks so bad, hang in there, the antibiotics should have you feeling better soon.

I've got mastitis too. I've been on meds for the last week or so and felt a lot better within a couple days. As PPs said, nurse frequently, and massage the affected breast while nursing - it really helps. I'm really sorry you have the flu on top of it, that sucks!

This exactly. Just got over a bout of mastitis, and my supply is coming back on that side. What helped me were hot showers while massaging the plugged ducts and using a heating pad on the impacted breast prior to feeding. I always started feeding with that breast and even pumped afterwards if I wasn't sure that it was drained. The pain from massaging and nursing is no joke, but they are the best things you can do. The antibiotics will get you through the fever and chills quickly, but the pain lasted for over a week for me. Also, Motrin helped me a lot, so chat with you MD about that -- it was the only thing that made nursing on that breast bearable. Good luck mama!

  • Thanks ladies. We're pumping and using formula. I ended up in the hospital to get fluids and get medication. My breast feels better but this flu is terrible. Praying my husband and LO don't get the flu. So worried about my LO.
