3rd Trimester

30 week ultrasound... baby is over 4 pounds!!

So I had an ultrasound the other day and they put all the measurement in and said that his weight was 4 lbs something (can't remember) oz. The ultrasound tech said that was the size for someone around 33 1/2 weeks and I'm only 30 1/2 weeks. Now I'm freaking out! Every ultrasound I have had so far said baby was measuring small so they moved my due date from 03/08 to 03/12. Now he's huge. I am planning on delivering at a birth center so I'm really scared of having like a 10 lb baby. Did anyone else have a similar situation where baby measure big at this stage! Help, I'm freaking out.

P.S. I haven't gained a ton of weight, 14 lbs so far, so I don't know why he would be so big. Do you think a super healthy diet would help make sure he doesn't get too big?

Re: 30 week ultrasound... baby is over 4 pounds!!

  • From what I understand, ultrasounds can be off by a LOT. I wouldn't worry just yet. Plus, women generally make babies the right size for their bodies.

  • I'm sure your baby's fine and he won't be "huge". The difference between 31 weeks and 33 weeks is only 1lb.

Keep in mind, baby's gain just under half a pound a week in those final weeks, and even less in the 30-35 weeks. But, estimating half a pound a week, your baby only has 5 more pounds to gain between now and your due date, and it could easily be less. A 9lb baby is big, but not "huge", and lots of women safely deliver 10+ lb babies.

  • Ultrasounds this late in the game are all estimated measurements.
+/- 10 days of your estimated delivery date. And +/- 2 pounds.

I side eye the fact that they changed your EDD. The first US is the most accurate and typically they do not change due dates unless there are known facts of conception etc. With DS they said he was small on his first US then from 18 weeks on he was huge and measured in the 90th percentile. He was born at 8 pounds, 8 ounces and 23.5" (@ 39w5d). They were guessing 10+ lbs.

I really would not worry. Sounds like a healthy baby.

    Good Luck!

  • I really would not worry about it. I went in for an ultrasound yesterday, and my baby was weighing in at 4 lbs 2 oz. This really isn't anything the doctor was alarmed about. My MFM said that I could possibly deliver an 8 lb baby by 40 weeks, which is really do-able.
  • DS#1 weighed in at 4lb at 30weeks. He was born on his due date at 8#15oz

  • DD was over 4 lbs. at my 30 week ultrasound also.  She was born at 39w3d weighing 8 lbs. 9 oz.  I had GD so her size was controlled by my diet as much as it was....I don't know how much of a difference it makes for someone without GD, though.

  • i had a growth u/s with DD at 30 weeks and she measured 5lbs 2oz. had another at 36 1/2 weeks and she measured 8lbs 8oz. i delivered her at 38 weeks weighing 9lbs 3oz so my u/s were pretty darn accurate. i have heard of them being off, it depends on the equipment and who is doing the measurements. at my u/s the tech and doctor both measured several times to make sure they were correct.

nothing wrong with a big baby though! you'll be fine :)

  • I had an ultrasound at 32 1/2 weeks and my DD was measuring at 5 lbs 6oz! She is measuring large for some reason, and I do not have GD. My doctor said she could end up being 12 lbs if I went to 40 wks. I am being induced at 37 wks due to pre-e and am having another growth sono this Tues., so we will have to see what she is measuring then! GL!

  • Take it with a grain of salt.

Ultrasound measurements, especially for weight, can be off by 1 to 2 pounds, and even when they are fairly accurate, the ultrasound could have been done after the baby just went through a growth spurt.

    I'm sure you'll be fine.

  • I feel the same way. I just had u/s at 32 weeks because my fundus measurement was too small, BUT all u/s measurements said baby was 4 lbs. and right on track for 32 weeks. I have gained 18 lbs. Now I've started to get anxiety over having a big baby. I'm a petite person (5'0" and 110 pre-) so I thought a smaller baby would be normal for me. I don't know if I will survive giving birth to a 7.5 lbs or larger baby...very anxious about it. I don't know what exactly you mean by super healthy diet, but I'm definitely not going to be eating any ice cream or fatty foods...I have steered clear of that stuff this far and not going to start now for sure.

  • Stick with your 6 week estimated due date and don't let them change it! Different babies grow differently in various weeks, so don't let it freak you out. My mother is a midwife and she said that is completely normal, but some doctors make the huge mistake to change upon such findings the due date (which they should NOT do) and then pressure the woman to get induced early, even though baby is not completely done growing yet!!
  • I agree with others. I was told 4-5 pounds at 31 weeks when I went into labor..he was born at 37 and weighed 6 pounds 9 oz.

  • Ultra sounds aren't always perfect. That said, some people do have 10lb, healthy babies. Please do not go on a diet to try to restrict your baby's healthy development. Because 1) that won't work and 2) it is ridiculous

  • Ha! Mine said 4lb3oz at 28 weeks! My doctor said she is big but not huge. No baby has been born into my family under 9lbs. We are all extremely tall. Plus these things can be off by quite a bit. I'm excited knowing my baby is growing and healthy.
