Breastfeeding question....

This may seem like a silly question but, I notice that I don't always have a letdown everytime DS nurses which now is about every 3-4 hrs depending on what we're doing. Is this normal or am I just not *feeling* it??? He's on the boob for the same amount of time whether I feel a letdown or not, I don't know if that matters? What do you ladies think?

Re: Breastfeeding question....

  • I feel the letdown about every other time he nurses though, so that's why I was questioning it.

  • I feel the letdown every time. I would think its possible not to feel it but maybe you can judge by how's your LO is eating. Even if I didn't feel it I would know it came by the gulping she starts doing. There is an instant change in how fast she is eating so her breathing changes too.

  • I don't always have a hard letdown and don't always feel it.

  • Yes, I do notice a change in breaths and him gulping milk down and can actually hear him drinking when I feel the letdown. That's why I'm curious if he's just comfort nursing every other nursing session the times I don't feel the letdown or hear him gulping milk. This would mean that he's really only nursing every 5-6 hrs.... He does eat all. the. time. Bottomless pit! Lol

  • I've never heard it referenced as a "hard" letdown. I'm assuming that it simply means that you feel the release of milk? So can I assume that he's still getting milk with each feeding, I'm just not always feeling it?

  • This is my second child, and I have never once felt a letdown while nursing. I only feel it while pumping.

You could have times where he is definitely comfort nursing and times where your letdown just may not be as foreceful now because your supply is regulated and your body has adjusted to his nursing demands. At this stage in the game, I'd trust your baby. He'd let you know of he's still hungry, and he knows how to really suck to get milk.

  • This just started happening to me. I used to always feel it. Now maybe two feedings a day I don't. MJ still seems happy and content so I am assuming she is getting milk.

  • I don't often feel a let down when I am nursing, more so when he has gone more than 3 hours without nursing. Buy I can tell he is getting milk every time because he is gulping.
  • Thank you for all the replies ladies, very helpful! :)

  • This is interesting! I still feel a letdown every single time.
  • Most of the time I feel a letdown, mine are really painful, but lately, every once in a while I don't feel it and she seems to be nursing so I assume I just wasn't paying attention and missed it (which would be hard to do since it usually hurts so much).
