Is Jamie too girly for a boy's name?

we have our a/s on Thursday, so I'm not sure if it will even be a problem, but our front runner boy's name is James Walter. (Walter is a family name, two of our grandfathers' names, my FIL's name, and DH's middle name. ) I'm not a huge fan of Jimmy as a nn, but I really like Jamie. I did a little research, and Jamie is a fairly popular male name/nickname in Scotland/England, but it is more common as a girls name in the US. My mom thinks it is "too girly" for a boy. I think it is cute and if he wants a more manly name when he is older, he can go by James or Jim. Thoughts?

  • I don't think it's too girly as a nickname for James.  One of my best friends goes by Jamie (and he uses James professionally).  If he decides he doesn't like it, he can always just use James.

  • I know at least a couple Jamie's that are boys. I think it's cute for a boy or girl.
  • Do you need a pre-determined NN? What's wrong with just calling him James? It's a classic strong name.

  • I love Jamie for a boy. James is a huge family name for DH. If it wasn't already so over used in his family I would have considered it for our boy.

  • @danabsd, my family is big on nicknames. I would rather "suggest" a nn than them picking a different one on their own. I do really like James without a nn as well though.

  • Jamie is girly IMO but I like James
  • I don't think it's girlie at all. I know the same amount of guys/girls with that name. Mind you, this is coming from someone who named her first son Taylor. A name that USED to be very masculine, now people assume that when they hear Taylor they think its a girl automatically.

  • I think it's fine. I know a Jameson who is 26 and goes by Jamie.

  • I like it. I have a friend whose son is named James and called Jamie. (about 6 years old)

  • My friend's son is Jameson, nn Jamie.  I've known more male Jamies than female ones actually.

  • Nope! Especially if James is his full name. I know plenty of Jamie/Jameys. I do like having James as a full name for applications/school stuff so people don't see the name and expect a girl.

I LOVE Jamie as a boys name. Look up Jamie from game of thrones. Thats a manly man if there ever was one-- ignore the other terrible character traits. The point is he's definitely a man. Lol

    Edited because typing is hard
  • Our son is going to be James and we are going to try very hard to keep it as just James. I too can't stand Jimmy. I know too many female Jamies to call my little boy that.
  • If you were naming him just Jamie then it might be iffy but still ok in my opinion, but James preferred nn Jamie is totally fine.  There was a boy Jamie in high school who might've had Jamie as his full name.  Not sure now that I think about it, but that's all anyone ever called him.
  • I worked with a guy named James and he went by Jamie. I personally don't care for it, but I don't think it's necessarily girlish.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Not too girly. It's our front runner, too, actually. I want James but not Jim or jimmy. So if a nickname has to happen, we'd try to steer it towards Jamie.

  • My cousin is named James and he goes by Jay a lot. Just another idea for you. I also don't think Jamie is too girly though.

  • DH is James (never Jim or variation of). When he was young, his family called him Jamie all the time. He doesn't go by now though--guess I'm not sure why. But no, I don't find it too girly.

  • As a Jamie, I probably pay more attention to the name, and I've come across many male Jamies while working in retail and banking. And it's definitely considered a male name in the UK more than a female name (I share my first name and maiden name with a handful of males in the UK...doesn't bother me!). It's a completely unisex name to me.

  • I know two little boys who go by Jamie, but their birth names are James. Another I know is named Jaime since the father is Puerto Rican (I think?)...anyway, they pronounce it like Jamie.

  • I'm English and Jamie is a boys name here. My cousin's son is a Jamie and I have an ex-bf named Jamie. It's mostly used as a NN for James, but my cousin's son was baptised Jamie.

  • I love it. James or Jamie.
  • I agree with PP's, I like Jamie and don't think it's too girly at all. My DH's friend is James, but goes by "Jamey". Which I kind of like if you're looking to maybe differentiate? I think spelled with an "-ey" it looks more masculine.

  • I don't think it's too girly. It is unisex though so I guess by comparison it's slightly more girly. I've seen Jaime for a boy ("ie" making it maybe too girly). Also Jamey. I like the suggestion of just Jay too. James is a great name and he may want to just go by that.
